The Freelander steering rack will not be an issue - what size wheels and tyres do you have - sounds like rubbing in the wheel arch somewhere etc
When you disconnect one of the tailshafts jack the front up the front of the car off the ground and start it up in gear and turn the steering wheel from side to side and listen for the sound.

Managed to get round to removing the propshaft. What a difference it has made!! The noise when turning has gone and also a few other clunks a have vanished. Only drove a short distance but all seams ok and drives nice enough. I dont do any off road driving so think I will probably leave it like this, in 2wd, until I move it on then I will refit the prop.
Did you remove both driveshafts?? In theory if not, the VCU will detect drive at one end (either from the gearbox or the rear axle) and not the other and will lock. That would be the theory but not sure if it is fact in real life.
I would remove both to be sure. I drove my Freelander around for some time in front wheel drive only and it felt a bit more sporty but with all the power just going to the front TC was on a bit more but was not an issue.

Yea removed the whole lot from the gearbox to the diff, shafts and vcu in one go. I am going to drive it like this now until I trade it in. TC wont be an issue as the bulb had been removed before I had it, also abs and hdc warning bulbs, have not replaced them. Not sure if I have said before but this is our 2nd car and only a cheap, well bought cheap, runaround for me so dont want to spend too much on it. I do like it though and it is a nice drive.
Thanks for your help and advise garry and also woko if your reading this.
