looking at buying freelander. need advice

hey all, looking at buying a freelander 1.8 petrol manual which has had its propshaft removed due to a crook vcu.

Wont see the car till tomorrow so I cant quite describe it yet but seller told me transmission has a bit of a whine. What should I be looking at? Not sure if entire propshaft was removed or what at this stage I'll have to find out tomorrow.

But wondering as to what I should look out for that would cause the noise after removing the propshaft? could the vcu still be on it? could the locking up on the vcu ruin the IRD then ruin the spline in the gearbox or what? hopefully its a simple fix as I dont really have the $$$$ to spend on a whole new drivetrain. Thanks

If it is still wining after having the prop removed, chances are that the IRD is stuffed... $$$

Which also means you don't have the $$ to spend on a new engine either. Steer clear of 1.8 petrol Freelanders.

Yep, the gaskets aren't the real problem. If the liners have moved, then you'll get very good at pulling the engine down.

NO - the IRD is a combined unit that contains the front diff and the PTO to the rear. No Ird means the nothing connected to the front wheels.

I would really suggest you give this car a wide berth.

    hmmm where to begin. lol

looked at the car earlier. it looked good. looked really good actually. upon starting it up the engine purred. all sounded good. until I tried to move it. It's a bit hard to describe but I'm sure you know where this is going.

it moves but the front end feels like it skips. basically I think the ird is stuffed. my only way to describe it at the moment is it feels like its jumping gears or something. maybe the teeth have come off. it doesnt make noise and all that. but its hard to move forward and back. like its seized or something.

is it even worth trying to save at this stage? he wants 500$ for it with rego till march but where to find the parts. I saw a freelander being wrecked for 500 so maybe thats got a good ird lol
