    FL1 TD4 Rear exhaust box

Does anyone know or have any suggestions for replacing the ridiculously large looking beer barrel thing hanging off the back end of the TD4

I`m after either an aftermarket item that won`t cost the earth or even open to any feedback regarding just binning the original muffler and piping the bugger straight through

I too have noticed this and read reports that the first thing to touch on a FL is the rear muffler which then pops off the exhaust mounts.

I am sure any muffler shop could suggest an oval muffler which would be quiet enough for general use and yet not hang down. The EEC noise regs and annual MOT mean the Poms cannot fit smaller Mufflers. The volume is necessary in a baffled muffler so that it is very quiet but flows enough at max exhaust flow.

Even in OZ a Ford Territory Turbo has 2 exhausts out of the muffler but one is blocked off. You increase the flow but hardly the noise just by opening it up.

My parents td4 has that muffler removed. They have lpg fitted and that's where the gas tank is fitted.
It is louder but not significantly. Talk with a exhaust shop they could either remove it or fit a small resonator.

Well that was all very easy

Calibre Exhaust Cannon - Stainless Steel, Universal - Supercheap Auto Australia

Just needed to shorten the male spigot going into it a couple of inches and cut away a little bit out of the plastic rear valance so the muffler would clear - The spigot end is clamped tight and riveted for good measure and to support the weight at the rear I simply self-tapped a sturdy T-bracket to the rear cross member and bolted it on to a stainless steel strap with a thick rubber washer spacer to take up any vibration.

Result: Heaps more ground clearance - Far less weight - Looks far better now and sounds really cool

PS Much quieter than I expected too!
