Send it back & get them to rebuild it under warranty or replace it...
I bought a second hand engine from a place in QLD i also asked for a MAF to suit $2175
Firstly the engine arrives without the MAF so i had to ring them up ask them to send it out
No dramas they said its in the mail
When it gets here it is damaged beyond use so i sent them an email saying the item was damaged
I will copy the email they sent me in return
hI
iF i HAVE ANOTHER I WILL SEND,
tHE UNIT WAS PART OF THE SALE NOT EXTRA TO THE MOTOR..
SO i WILL SEE WHAT I HAVE AROUND HERE............
REGS
Now i get the impression that he is trying to say its not covered by warranty by the looks of this email
So i decide to check the engine they had sent me
Pulled of the rocker covers and it is full of sludge this engine is meant to be 105000k motor but by the looks of it its never had an oil change EVER
there is carbon build up on the valves the sludge is half an inch deep in the heads
I am considering just pulling it apart and having a good look
but if do that i loose what warranty i do have witch isn't much by the look of it
Any suggestions
Send it back & get them to rebuild it under warranty or replace it...

You did buy a secondhand engine so really it comes down to how much info you asked for on the engine. You should have asked for pics to show the state of it, a pic showing the engine number, remove rocker cover and take a pic of the inside etc.
You have to do your homework particularly if it's a private sale. If you start uncovering issues then private or trader, you get bargaining power.
Pics will also show what your getting and support damage claims or if something other than what you asked for was supplied.
Despite being 105k old, it may not neccesarily be the sellers fault it's never had an oil change either.
If you payed the coin for it without asking for proof of what you are buying, you can't really expect much from the seller.
The sellers hasn't misappropriated anything, I just don't think you bargained enough for what you got. And being secondhand, he doesn't have to rebuild it either.
Cheers
I wouldn't expect a rebuild that would be a bit ridiculous
I did buy from a reputable seller i thought plenty of communication via email prior to purchase about 6 emails and a phone call
As for asking for pictures from a wrecker of the inside of an engine
Could you disassemble and take pictures please (you cant be serious)
I know without asking what they would say
But when the MAF arrived broken it got me thinking
yep, purchased second hand not reconditioned so as it comes out of the donor vehicle is as you get it.
the MAF deal welll.... ummmm yeah......
some wreckers think that because its part of the engine management that it stays with the ECU and harness
other wreckers think that a swap over engine includes all the engine management gear including the ECU and Harness but they generally charge more.
The MAF may have been damaged in transport... or the Appy may have broken it and posted it before the boss could find out.
in any event good luck with it.

Take some photos of the .......
The overall motor
The engine number
The sludge ... complete with a ruler showing the depth of it
The MAF and the packaging that it came in
Make sure your camera is in a Macro setting for close up's
Now bung up a Email with the pictures pasted on it ... Be careful of the MB size of the Email .. or it won't be delivered ... keep it to 1.5MB
Just "politely" state your case ... that the motor described, appears not be the one that was delivered ..... do not abuse them.
Mike
I did ask for a MAF and there price was for both
Im not going to jump up and down about the engine till i have fitted it i cant see them selling a dodgy motor intentionally and accidents do happen
My email then the reply
Thanks for the reply
What exactly do you mean buy it was part of the sale not extra to the motor ?
I asked for a quote for an engine and airflow meter in good working order not just the engine i was quite specific and you quoted for both items $2175 delivered witch is a fair price for both items
As you can see in the pictures it is damaged beyond use and it was sent that way as there is no broken off bit in the box
Thanks
Steve
Does anyone see abuse in that email this was his reply
