    Install the motor and get it running before you can the seller, sludge is common in rover v8's as it tends to gather in the heads and not drain effectively back into the sump, i fixed that on mine with a die grinder by cleaning up the casting around the drain holes.

    Looks like a 14 year old motor to me ... you did buy a 1996 engine
    IMHO The sludge indicates a lot of short drives on a 105k motor

    it could still be ok if its an engine from a vehicle thats drowned the electrics while running underwater and the vehicles been written off that way...

    do any of the rockers/rods look busted up? hows the oil in the sump?...
