    Do gooders MADNESS!

There is a suggestion in south Australia to bring the speed limit in some areas to 30KPH
I guess that the only way to be on the limit will be to engage lower range on the 4WD!
I cannot see how it would be possible to keep that speed on an XR6 automatic or any medium performance automatic car.
    The article is HERE

So what do the "performance cars" do in peak hour stop start traffic????
What do they do in shopping centre carparks, what ever they do to keep their speed down they should be able to apply this logic to lower speed zones.
I would love a 30 kph speed zone in my short narrow residential street, with cars parked each side of the kerb and a lot of young kids in the street, I see cars travelling down at 50 kph and it seems TOO FAST.
I think low speed limits for minor residential streets and lanes is ok.

<H1>SA may look at 30kph speed limits

SA may be urged to look at 30kph zones

South Australia's road safety thinker-in-residence says cutting urban speed limits to 30 kilometres per hour on some roads may be warranted.
Professor Fred Wegman has just arrived in Adelaide from the Netherlands where he is the managing director of the Institute for Road Safety Research.
The road toll in the Netherlands is about 40 per cent lower than in South Australia's.
Professor Wegman says he will consider a range of road safety measures for SA, including current speed limits.
SA Road Safety Minister Jack Snelling says Professor Wegman's expertise is welcome.
Professor Wegman will be in Adelaide for one month and will return before the end of the year to present his recommendations.

    FFS! What a friggin moron....

Means a Southern suburbs resident will take up to 2 hours to get to the city (currently takes about 45min outside peak hour - 1.5 hours in peak hour anyhow)

Better roads, driver education etc... is the key...

Create a better idiot, not reduce the law to suit...

    You have to agree that:
Any sensible and good river will drive at a reasonable speed in areas like your short narrow residential street.
Also you have to agree that will be impossible to monitoring the speed limits in all the narrow streets.
So there is not point to put new laws in place when they cannot be enforced.
Idiots will be not eliminated from the roads with laws like this.
They have to look for other solutions that perhaps are not political popular.

In NSW when speed limits were dropped to 50klm/h in residential areas pedestrian fatalities increased by 12%, the cause, the biggest killer on Australian roads, "INATTENTION". With cops booking people for 1 or 2 klm/h over the speed limit in residential areas, motorists spend more time watching the speedo than watching the road, FACT, Regards Frank.

... we've got the Lord Mayor of Sydney proposing the closure of George Street and making it a pedestrian and cyclist area only - and the State Government is seriously considering it !!!!!

We've also got 'Shared Zones' for vehicles and pedestrians with a 10kph speed limit. What a load of unenforceable crap!

Frank, you can't get booked for doing 1 or 2 k's over the limit by Police. There are limitations on the accuracy of a vehicle's speedo and also tolerances of the speed detection device (Lidar or Radar) as well as the accuracy of the operators estimation of your speed in order to then use the device to 'get a number'. I know speed cameras have a very low tolerance and they'll soon to be private mobile speed units in NSW trying to use low tolerances, but not that low.

You're quite right though - people spending more time looking inside at a dial rather than outside at the road...it's got more to do with peoples driving than a sign. I'm pretty sure most of us could all drive around suburbia within 5 or maybe 10 k's from the posted limit without ever looking at a speedo.

In my opinion there should be four speed limits - 60, 80, 100, 120. School zones should have fences, tunnels and bridges AND a proper education system and set down / drop off area for kids. Roads are for motor vehicles, NOT for pedestrians and NOT for cyclists. Footpaths and cycleways are for pedestrians and cyclists.

    Matt.

Speed limits only apply to those people that are going to take note of them.

Before any speed limit is changed, not just reduced, the real question needs to be asked "how many crashes / fatalities are caused by speeding drivers?"

If someone is inclined to exceed the speed limit, then lowering the limit will have little effect.

Lower the speed limit too much and more people will ignore it. Many are set too low anyway.

Tell that to the people who have been booked for travelling 1km/h over the limit and see what their response is. It can and does happen.

Like hell they are. Sometimes I ride to work. My car stays at home. I'm still paying rego and taxes so why aren't I entitled to use the nice black strip the local gov and council has layed down. Actually, I'm paying 2 rego's at the moment, so I'm even more entitled than most.

    There's a problem of course.

If as they continually claim (to raise revenue) that "speed kills" and they reduce the limit to 30, and people keep dying (and they will) .. what then ?!
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Back to the old days of the first "horseless carriages".

Reduce the speed limits even further (to walking pace) and have somebody with a warning flag walk in front of each vehicle.
    Cheers .........
