Disco 3 what am I in for?

Gday all, looking at buying an 05/06 Disco 3 2.7 td. All opinion so far has been along the lines of crap reliability and expensive repair and service bills.
I am interested to hear from people that actually currently have or have owned a Landrover of any model, an improvement on current advice....
What am I looking at as far as servicing costs and parts etc and what "genuine issues" there are with these vehicles that would render them to be considered an unreliable vehicle? What should I look out for etc?
Want it as a family/touring car and able to tow a 6.5 mtr boat as well as mild to mid off road work.

    Cheers

    You're in for something special.

Our conditions are a bit different to yours so it would be hard to give a really accurate comparison.

There is a LOT of myth/hearsay in the poor reliability arguments. Over here, the general consensus is that they are very reliable.

One thing noticed over here was that the suspension compressor on very early ones was a bit light. This was soon fixed. That said, we have a lot of very poor roads that highlighted this problem.

They can be a bit hard on brakes. But this is what you get with a 2.5t car that handles like a sedan.

    Hope this helps.

In Australia people drive their D3's:
    • Over snowy mountains, Along beaches, Across deserst, Through rainforests,

Most of which do not have proper roads, often towing large trailers / caravans.

I think towing a boat in Denmark will be OK

Seems most of the unreliability talk comes from unreliable toyota mouths

think so as some one posted this on the p4x4 site
Hi All, I would appreciate your thoughts on this dilemma...

Due to life being so busy with family, kids, work, etc. etc. we have sadly decided to sell the beloved well sorted 80 series, and go for a more city suitable 4x4 like a Prado, or Discovery 3.

The total $ spend will vary a bit depending on how much I get for the Cruiser, but somewhere in the $40 - $45K bracket.

So my question is which, the Prado 2005 to 2010, or Discovery 3 2005 to Discovery 4 release?
if so welcome hang on welcome anyway
