Most of this crap comes from people who do not work or have family members that industry. The rubbish is the retailer like wollworths and coles just want more money and market share, they are not interested in what is good for the consumer. These companies will not pay penalties for additional hours. What they want to do is just have them converted to normal hours.
See if most other wont work for penalties or additional monies on weekends, nights or public holidays. And generally these are the lowest paid workers in our community anyway.
This is just about self centered people who are of the "I,I,I" mentality. Yes some industry need to operate 24/7 but not most retailers.
I do think it is a good idea that furniture and electrical be allowed to open weekends, but still with penalty rates. See how eager everyone is if they have to actually pay for the convenience.
What I meant was that I had a bit of a shock when I first moved to WA, I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and though "I'll just pop down to a supermarket to get some supplies". I sat in the empty car park of the first supermarket I came accross wondering why it was empty for about 5 minutes, eventually I found a IGA and all was well.

I find it slightly annoying that I have to spend extra on groceries because the only convenient supermarket near me is a IGA as the bigger "Woolies" is only open when I'm at work. If this means I need to get a life and I'm an I,I,I, person so be it.

Petrols stations were on roster on weekends and not open at all after 7pm.
Some towns did not even have a 7day a week mini mart let alone a 24hr.
    But we all survived.
This sounds very similar to the small town in the Far North of NZ that I grew up in, I remember the great fanfare at the launch of TV3! Three channels! How would we choose??

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
I found it really freaky to go back to SA and shop at 10pm.
My point is we all want convenience but dont want to pay the price for it. If you want it you should also be prepared to pay a higher price for labour after 6pm. Why should someone else have to work until 10pm at night just because you can not organise your life.
Yes I have worked shift work all my working life and most of it on 12hr shifts and I still seem to be able to work around it with no ill benefit and yes sometimes I have to use a more expensive IGA or deli, but am happy to do so as these guys have provided that convenience. I have also been compensated for working these hours, woolworths, coles and bunnings etc do not want to pay additional pay rates, they want the workers to do so for nothing.
3 TV channels, geez we only had one up until the late eighties.

Looks like I did miss your point I've always assumed that the smaller places, IGA's etc, were more expensive because of their size, I didn't take into account the extra costs of staying open later.... I've adapted to living here now, and not having a 24 hour shopping center is a small price to pay for living in WA!
