His surf has a 2.4 turbo which seized due to a faulty oil filter.
Now he has just bought a Hilux intending to put the non turbo 3L in the surf but wants to know if he can swap over the Turbo bits off the 2.4 onto the non turbo 2.8 and if there are any problems in doing so.
I would have gone to the surf fourm but they won't let me in. Must be a Toyota thing.
Why swap out a 'good' series of toyota diesel for a bad one??? The 2L is a far more reliable engine, just down on power. The good option is a 2L with aftermarket turbo, as the factory Toyota Surf turbo is a one off made by Toyota and VERY exxy to repair. They are well made BUT won't last forever.. Ditch the surf electronic injector pump, and just put up with getting blitzed on hills by Tdi auto Discos...
The 3L and 5L are both prone to bearing and crank failures if you don't change the oil EVERY 5000km. There is a 100% chance of bottom end failure at 10,000km oil change interval, that is if you get to 10,000km before the engine does a bearing. Never have I seen a 'modern' diesel engine soot up so quickly. Forget using Synthetic oils etc, the best thing is use a good mineral oil and change at 5K. The Z9 filter might be cheap, but 2 oil changes for every 1 in a Tdi etc is wasteful.
I'd LOVE to fit a 300Tdi to a lowlux and turn it into a real performer, AND get up the nose of a few lowlux worshippers

On second thoughts, that'd be a waste of a perfectly good 300Tdi.....
