Hi Ausfree, that Fassifern operation was a favourite site for steam enthusiast right up till the end of steam operations.
I have a sound track “record” ( thats how old it is ) of steam operation in NSW and it has a couple tracks of double headed 60s lifting coal trains from the station and up the bank at Fassifern.
G'day. Yes, industrial steam is very interesting. Alison, one of four 040 saddle tank locomotives of various builders belonged to John Lysaght's of Newcastle. The other three sisters are Marian, Marjourie and Kathleen. Both the later are at the Richmond Vale railway near Kurri Kurri. A similar locomotive also worked at Stewarts and Lloyds (Tubemakers) its name is Corby, and is at Dorrigo. I used to do volunteer work there many years ago. I drove Marjourie once under instruction and it was an experience i'll never forget. I must get back there some day soon. Some interesting loco's are there, notably the R.O.D 23 Robinson 2 8 0 tender engine, Kitson 2 8 2 T #9 & #10 Richmond main and Pelaw main, Marjourie and Kathleen and numerous 10 class. When I was last there, there was also a steam driven crane that was used in the construction of the BHP works in Newcastle.Quote:

One of the best steam videos ever "The Days of Steam" By the late Phil Belbin. If you can get a copy, shows the last day of Garretts working out of Newstan colliery and the standing start up Fasifern Bank. Any of Belbins productions are Excellent........
G'Day mate, I am not steam enthusiast in the true sense of the word, I am just running on memories of the various steam train operations in the Newcastle area, I must admit that I am very interested in the old steam trains. Pity you could'nt download that sound track onto this Forum, it would give some of these young fellas an idea of what it was like!!!:) Oh, I would be interested too!!!:DQuote:

Those clips where great Groucho, I noticed the Garret had black smoke and the smaller engine and the 3810 in the other clip had white smoke, was the Garret an oil burner???:)

No AD60 garretts were oil burners. The only oil burners were some 50 class and the D 59's from new, when imported were oil burners. all but two were converted to burn coal..........
