Thanks for the sage advice and humour folks.
I better buy a fire extenguisher.
We just bought one.
2000 model, 190,000kms, 5sp manual, 2.0l 4cyl petrol, new tyres. Rego till December, 12 mth AVN warranty, $5k
Looks remarkably tidy, well serviced, and well maintained. Gearbox and tfr case seem fine, has a decent low range by the feel of it.
Got a few cosmetics and tidyup bits to do before we pick her up next week.
Daughter's happy, but she still wants a SWB series.
Once she learns to drive a bit. we'll upgrade![]()
Seems like you got a lot of car for not a lot of money. Well done. Don't know about the Series upgrade though. The tough little Korean just might worm its way in to her heart.![]()
G'day FenianEel
I was just about to recommend an early 4 cylinder one, quite economical, the V6 is thirsty, SIL had onetraded for a Cerato, have friends that have 4cylinder units no problems both of them are daily drivers, one doing the Caboolture-Brisbane shuffle, the other Caboolture-Nth Coast-Blackbut runs, happy with them, but the V6 too thirsty.
cheers
A friend of ours had one of the long body Sportages like you just bought.
They had a recall to replace something to do with the radiator fan. It could come off and mince the radiator. Maybe it broke its blades or came free from its mounting.
Whatever the cause my friend did lots of kms with his so he found out the expensive way before the recall was issued.
I think he sold his a few years ago with 200k kms or more with no general problems other than the above.
They also had problems with their auto locking hubs but not sure if that showed up on his or not.
Only 4wding his saw was Double Island a number of times. I don't recall him ever getting stuck.
The only thing I didn't like about it was leg room in the front. There wasn't much of it.
My father in law has had one for what must be almost 10 years now. In many ways these older ones are like the Subaru L series. They are very cheap and plasticy inside and out. He's had a good run with it, but then he doesn't drive off-road and probably polishes it every week. By no means a great car but there are certainly worse. It's comparable to a RAV4 of the same vintage but probably hasn't as much get up and go.
I'd go a Subaru over a Kia though.

The German electronics technician and fuel injection, car computer expert who finally sorted out all the built in Ford **** in the Two in One Falcon has this opinion of Kia. Try saying this with a heavy German accent. "Kia are phocking nightmare, Audi are phocking nightmare". I gather there are some makes/models that he makes the sign of the cross at.
He has a list on the office counter of makes and models he would prefer you take to someone who needs the work. Some he will forthrightly tell you to take away, he will not touch them. All electronic singing and dancing Range Rovers are accepted but I got the feeling he would like to speak to your bank manager before commencing work.
URSUSMAJOR
Gday,
The Sporty is an underrated 4by. It has been out shon by the Suzuki craze and the fact that it was KOREAN many people did not want to touch it. It is a shame that the aftermarket industry did not take to it readily. Fact is you will buy a Sportage in better condition an half the Km for a similar Suzuki Vitara.
They have a few little electrical gremlins that are easily overcome.
I have a 97 model (little bum) and think it is fantastic. It tows my Spacematic CUB camper surprisingly well. It is fantastic runabout around town and easy to park. It is quite nimble on the freeway with plenty of power to spare. The Longer wheel base is a good option for space. They are robustly built so are actually quite heavy. Fuel economy is around the 10-12l per hundred on average.
I currently have a 98 gold chip fitted, snorkel, nudge bar, Hayman reece hitch, electric brakes, sheepskin seat covers throughout and K&N Filter. I have also remove the annoying dinger that will drive you nuts when you leave the keys in the car, door open lights on.
Aftermarket options are available, you just need to know where to look.
These two websites are your best bet for research and answers. 4x4 wire is your bible and there are some extremely knowledgeable people on there (Axeman is the fault finder guru). OZKIA is excellent to research if a Kia Sportage is for you before buying.

In Aus you can source the following
Dual battery tray (Piranha)
Extractors (wildcats through Genie)
Up to 75 mm lift kits through suspension stuff, ultimate suspension 40mm front 50-60mm rear
Cargo barrier
Alloy bull bars ECB and TJM
Skid plates through EDS in QLD
Aftermarket air filters K&N
Performance chips (Power chip in three different settings and they can custom tune)
Snorkel from Outdoor Auto (that’s my KIA in the picture)
Interior overhead console for radios
Aftermarket free wheeling hubs to replace the vacuum ones when they fail (and they will eventually) Warn and AVM do replacements.
OS
you can source body lifts in America
Air operated difflocks from Greece
Auto locker from Brazil.
So as you can see you can get most items to make a Sporty off road credible but they are quite good standard and will surprise you where they will go. The limited slip in them is awesome.
Here is a list of websites that are worthwhile for a Sporty tragic.

Hope this helps you in your research. As with any car, finding one with good service history is definitely the best way to go.
Ive had mine on Stockton a couple of times now with no burning issue(pun intended) LOL
Cheers Chris
