    Running out of fuel

Well, after 10 plus years of driving cars and things powered by an engine I have never ever run out of fuel and I have done it twice this week. ;D
The fuel gauge in the disco hasnt worked properly for some time so i have just been going off the km's as to when its empty. Well at 750km it coughed and spluttered and stopped on me, i waited a bit and cranked and she coughed back into life so i made for the nearest servo quick smart. Got to the lights up the hill from the servo and she started to starve for fuel again, coughed a bit so i coaxed her through the lights and down the hill. As i got to the roundabout near the servo she stopped completely, fortunately there wasnt much traffic so i coasted through the roundabout and right up to the bowser.

On sunday the bike conked out after running dry, i thought the reserve tap function worked, turns out it doesnt so on run it drains the tank. Wont make that mistake again.

What are your running out of fuel stories?

Always forget to turn the tap on the bikes back after running on the reserve untill it stops Used to have two security patrol cars that ran both LPG and petrol no one likes to refuel so they would be driven untill the current tank runs out then switch to the other only to find it empty as well got so bad i was taking gerry cans out 2 or 3 times a week

Ran out of fuel twice (well not technically out of fuel) on our Madigan trip due to no gauge and the fuel change over to the aux tank not working.

Ran out in the Rangie about 20km out of Alice Springs in 1985 because I refused to be ripped off by 70c/l (we can only wish for those prices now). Trouble was we then added another 50-60km of side trips, as was the case then, we had to get into Alice Springs before the banks closed, so IIRC Numpty went on ahead and got money and fuel

Once worked for a company that sacked its operators for running out of fuel, old time tough guy, great bloke, sort of boss that would buy you a few beers on friday, put a bit of fuel in personel vehicle, know to bail his workers out of the can, genunie great guy until you run out of fuel. I worked for him for five years and seen 3 operators sacked and you were foward warned

i ran out of fuel at work when it was in the middle of the work shop and then again ran out at a massive intersection up here, i swear people see hazard lights and stop behind instead of go around

then another time went out to a brake down at a servo, and ran out on the way

I suppose on some diesel machines though running out of fuel means dicking around bleeding the system etc so its a real hassle.

That was one good thing about the disco i just cranked her over till she sucked the fuel up and away i went.

I was co driving for a TTF operator on a replen tasking, we finished refueling the other vehicles and then about 5k out of the replen site stopped dead, out of fuel after having discharged over 10K L of dieso and emptying the tanker.
