    Desert Country - Wild Flowers

    Hi there all

Well apart from my land rover I have a caring sharing side - of nature at its best

Mother Nature is truely amazing with its colour and the various colours of the Desert Sturt Pea that come out after huge rains (And I thought they were only red - how wrong).

I need to confess, the pictures were taken by a work colleges who is the camera guro - he spend the same amount on his cameras as I do on my toys.

    Well enjoy the pictures.

    All the best

    Wayne

Great photos ellard. Sturt's Desert Pea is normally only red (with black centre) though white ones are known in the wild but are not common. Multicoloured hybrids are also known in the wild but are even rarer than the white ones. Did you mate tell you where he took them? I am a suspicous old bugger, but I suspect they are cultivars. You can even get grafted varieties. The desired flowering material is grafted onto rootstock of the New Zealand Glory Pea (Clianthus puniceus), which is not susceptible to root rot, a major problem when trying to grow Sturt's Desert Pea in wetter environments.

    Cheers

awsome, theres a myth that you cant have a colourful flower filled garden if you have all natives, but thats proof that its a myth, I love native plants.

Desert pea is everywhere up ther at the moment.

Desert Pea other than the standard red/black is rare and unusual because even if you collect the seeds of a white desert pea, they grow red/black. Apparently CSIRO have had a go but dont know why. We used to go exploring through the bush looking for multi coloured ones somewhere in the red carpet!..

A few years ago they had the Aust dirt Circuit racing come to the Roxby Circuit, and in time for the racing the whole centre of the racetrack area was covered with desert pea! Same as the Roxby Golf Course...sea of red (bastard to find your ball!)

Wayne you should talk to Dave K, his photos are great and obviously so are the paintings... (for the rest of you.. Dave Kovac - Outback Artist well worth a visit, Dave and his missus are really nice people and strongly involved in both Andamooka and Roxby Downs- his paintings are fantastic)

I'll dig some of my d/pea photos out later and throw in here,

    Thanks Wayne for posting!,

(how did that last trip past my village go? Did you get what you were after?)
