I read somewhere that when merging, if your side indicator is in front of the other vehicle's side mirror (meaning they can clearly see you are in front and indicating), they should give way. I guess provided that's correct then if you merge and they don't give way and you collide, they are technically in the wrong as they did not avoid the collision.

Sounds like the CAMS rule (ab)used in V8 Supercar races.

Not SHOULD give way, MUST give way. If they fail to allow the other car to merge, they are at fault. It is a commonly abused rule, as most people think that if they are in the main running lane, then they have right of way. They need to go back and read thier learners manual again... It is stated very cleary in there...

Broke a spring on my 14' off road van last year. It was the LHS main leaf and I was a couple of hundred K's East of Katherine. Managed to stick a lump of wood between the chassis and the axle to raise the van and tie the axle foreward with a couple of ratchet straps.
All well and good but I wasn't game to do over 80k's with this setup and as it was the LHS wasn't game to pull over into the rough stuff to allow extra passing room. I had become the typical slow mover caravan driver.
As I could see traffic aproaching from the rear I was able to get on the UHF and explain/apologise to the following traffic. If you don't know the road there are plenty of passing opportunities but still not a position I was comfortable with.
The best of the lot were the truckies, once they understood the situation they were fantastic, and these were the most inconvenienced. Even the Toyota and Nissan drivers, with one exception, were nice to me.
The worst was a middle aged woman in a 200 series towing nothing who gave me a hell of a verbal spray. Used language a sailor would have been proud of. Get off the road, inconsiderate bastard, how dare you, police should arrest you etc. Even questioned my parentage and called me some choice names. Unbelievable. I held her up for the best part of 30 seconds before she overtook me at vast speed hurling abuse and showing me the finger.

Actually SA road rules state the left lane must give way.

every driving test Ive had to take has the main lane with right of way when both vehicles are level pegging, or when the merging lane terminates but if its an open merge then the vehicle leading has right of way.

The rule of thumb that most instructors I know use is "if you can see their headlights then you are in front."
