saw the title dump and burn, and ipswich in the subject and just assumed some poor sucker with a LR got stolen and burned out
Just caught ABC news to night and they mentioned that Ipswich Council was holding Carols tonight and the RAAF were putting on a special Dump & Burn before the F-111s are retired this week.
Bolted up to Ipswich just in time to see the show.
What a RUSH!
I hadn’t see one live before and the guy kept it burning while he circled 3 times around the city.
An amazing sight and a shame they are now to be retired.

According to Channel 7 news this evening, 11.30 am next Friday a formation of F-111s will take off from Amberley and fly over Ipswich and Brisbane, the formation will then break into 2 groups...one will fly over the Gold Coast while the other will do a sortie over the Sunshine Coast, they will then line up and "attack" Amberley then land and.... "that will be that"
No doubt...followed by drinking, in moderation of course, and much reminiscing in the mess I suspect... as there should be![]()
Ahhh! the answer to that question resides in the voluminous reports which are published as white papers etc. It's not just a "fighter" as such but a "platform". Said platform carries 'surprise packets' which it launches from a relatively safe distance and surprise packet finds its own way to where it's intended to go... lowers risk to platform, pilot and navigator who hopefully live to fight another day ...
Does anyone know what is to become of them once grounded? Father is member of ex RAAF association who enquirer some time ago about acquiring one to put up as a static memorial. Were told no decision as to what was to happen to them had been made. They were though told a fee of $1m AU would be required to prep the aircraft prior to any hand over so start fund raising now.
