Confession - I almost traded my Defy in on a JK. If you don't need payload, great trucks for fun. If the Rubi came in a diesel I'd have one.

Anyway - as I almost bought one, I can report that there is an all new model coming out for '11 which is quite upmarket from the present model - might be worth waiting for.

If spare part pricing and availability is not a concern, then no worries. I've a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo which is a great 4WD. Full time 4WD, centre diff viscous coupling (who needs manual CDL), LSD, in line 6 all cast iron engine, <1800 Kg. All standard. Not a bush basher but a great comfortable 4WD. Chrysler have bugger all spares in Aus, they all come from their central store in Singapore and the prices Chrysler charge are enough to make you throw up. Land Rover spare prices and availability is far superior to Chryslers.
Resale prices can be pretty ordinary if thats a problem for you.

A great 4WD, but you wouldn't want to rely on Chrysler Australia to help you out if it breaks.

I always thought Landy men would prefer to see their women in a Lada if anything other than a Land Rover.

the Rubicon is the most capable 4x4 out of the box made for general RV civilian use.

As much as a landrover die hard as I am there is not a single landy that would come within cooee of the Rubicon off road. No I am not talking about comfort, payload or top end speed or fuel efficiency I am talking about going to a caryard buying a stock Rubicon and a stock anything else that you can buy in australia and drive with a normal car license and go off road in it. Nothing else from Japan Korea Indian England USA Germany (unimog not car sized) Sweden (maybe with volvo but you cant buy it in Oz) will come close.

WHY because they looked at what the modders were doing, asked everyone what they wanted then built it. Pretty simple really

Agree with that - though the G-wagen would be equivalent if it still comes with factory lockers (though about 5x the price!!!). 90/110 with ETC wouldn't be too far behind, but has weaker diffs/axles and is more $$$.

The jeep is also a heep (pun intended) less expensive than a 90/110 or other comparable vehicle.

If you do want to mod it there are a bazillion bits available cheaply ex-US.

I think the 5 door is fugly though...
