When, in a small marketplace like Australia, the Colesworths and Bunnings and Harvey Normans achieve the market domination they have, then they dictate to suppliers not the other way around as is the norm elsewhere. For example these retailers often don't keep stock, suppliers keep stock; floor stock in their retail outlets is on consignment; credit terms are 90-120 days or longer; supplier staff have to be the shelf fillers; sometimes suppliers have to pay a premium for the retailer to make shelf space available.
An Australian maker of engineer's cutting tools has not kept factory or warehouse stock for at least twenty years. They appointed state/district distributors who have to order and keep stock. Distributors supply major clients, dealers, and retailers. Very big end users are supplied direct by the maker at the same discount off RRP as distributors receive. Distributors were receiving 45% discount off RRP and they negotiated deals with their customers, the maker mostly remaining aloof from the retail end. Because they are supplying a multitude of small resellers and have only a couple of small rival Australian competing manufacturers, this firm is in the opposite position to Colesworth-Bunnings-Harvey Norman and still dictates terms to resellers

Classic example of (and reason for) buying overseas.
Can you guess which one I went for...??
PM121 Diff Guard - zinc coated (usually 14.95GBP)

Don't tell me one companies overheads are more than the others, or has different staffing requirements, or premises costs, inferior quality, or any of the other lame excuses made by "some" Australian companies, coz I simply won't and don't believe you.
My decisions are predominantly made on cost. I haven't made squillions from the last boom, and probably won't from the next. I have huge monthly expenditures (more by circumstance than choice), so cost actually is very important in my decision making. But I can say I'm over being ripped off by various places and people in Australia, especially here in WA.
Just on the subject of retailer mark ups, I went to buy an Ipod 12v cigarette lighter power supply today.
Dick Smith -$19.95 for USB
K mart - $24 for ipod plug
JB Hi fi-$39!!! for an ipod one ( non gold non genuine)
Looked on ebay and ranged from $4 from HK to $7 from an OZ seller postage free. I bought the $7 one.
Now it seems to me the JB mark up is probably 500% or so.
That's not a mark up_THIS is a mark up.

The murdochs and packers of the world (when alive) used to pay around $2000 tax each year...
Don't confuse creative accounting with prosperity or otherwise...
Brian - I did some work for a manufacturer of garden tools and irrigation products - who sell some of their products through bunnings. I suggested that bunnings would drive a hard bargain, however they claimed it was quite lucrative for them.
I don't know what figures you are talking about but the Herald Sun reported Myer Profits for the full year at $168.7 million - so you are short about $100 million (see: "... under Mr Brookes the department store increased full-year profit by 55 per cent to $168.7 million" Myer reignites pay rise debate | Herald Sun)
I wish I could get an 89% cost of living increase as Mr Brookes is getting (as we know the improved performance of Myer is wholly his work, with no input from the employees on the shop floor!).
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Whilst I understand your sentiment, I think we are already overtaxed, one of the highest tax nations on the planet
The Government does not deserve 1 more cent of my hard earned money. They stuffed up the implementation of the GST, it was supposed to get rid of a whole stack of taxes but they botched it, so now we pay hidden taxes, then get to pay GST on the tax!! (maybe the Gov sees it as providing a service by taxing us, so can legitimately claim GST on the service they provide??)
All the State and Federal Governments do such a crap job of using our taxes to provide the basics, why on earth should they be given yet more money to waste?
Whilst I try to support small local business here in Oz, but I have a hard time when most of the time the cost is 2-5x more than buying the same item from overseas.
I really dont care if the Gov charge GST on my overseas purchases, it will still be alot bloody cheaper than buying locally.
I have never supported the big stores like Harvey Norman, or Myer, this just solidifies my resolve to vote with my feet!.
we maybe "over taxed" but look at one of the benefits , age pensioners only paying $5.60 for a script, in some countries that script could cost several hundred dollars and some countries pensioners could not by any medicines
