    Hi Vern,

A friend had DVT in her leg (ankle to hip?) at a tender age of 28. She suspects she may have a genetic blood clotting condition and is being tested for it.

She got it a week (?) after an Africa-Australia flight and caught it relatively early (pain in the leg that wasn't helped by pain killers). She responded well to warfarin, and is now off it after several months of treatment.

No clots, and no real problems after treatment, AFAIK. She's been very careful since and wears compressions stockings etc on all flights.

I hope your treatment goes well. Best of luck!

    Bojan

on warfarin now as well as claxene until warfarin takes oveer. Docs found 22cm clot in my leg, thank god its below the knee. aswell as a superficial clot. If i hadn't have had the superficial clot i'd have never known. let the treatment begin!

Matt was really looking forward to me wearing tights, i think i would end up sacking him

people should invest in TED's before long hauls.. and keep up exercise.. 30 mins a day of exercise that makes your heart rate increase!!
    Vern,
i went through this about 4 yrs or so ago, exactly the same, just thought i had a sore leg & slept on it funny, didnt actually go the doctor for a day or so & when found out & doc asked why didnt you come in earlier..I was lost & took a good look at myself & said then & there, Time to look after yourself now! I had to self inject needles for the next 2 Months, was also on tablet medication (warfrin). But months of blood tests & seeing my doc regularly gave me the confidence to just move on.
I still today sit at airports & wander, but do my excersise's prior to getting on a plane & also while i am on one. I have a family trip planned late this year to the USA & yes it will always be in the back of my mind. But if you prepare & take the small precautions it will hopefully not come back.

Pete, may i ask what a TED is please.

    Cheers & Good luck.

TED - Thromo embolic deterrant stockings. Also known as anti-embolic stockings, TEDs is a better known brand of them.

Pistolpete, which hospital are you in? What do you do?

correct, they are a tight fitting stocking, white in colour in hospital (cheaper version) or a brown colour if you buy them from a chemist (very expensive version) they compress your legs preventing the pooling of blood in your legs which is the main cause of a DVT

I work at sir charles gairdener, I'm a registered nurse in the emergency department

What a coincidence. I work 1 floor up from you in the Nuclear Medicine Dept. Better watch what I say now when I have to call the ED nurses to organise scans...

My mother died from exactly this.
DVT after drips via the foot when they couldn't get veins in the arm. She was a paraplegic though. Blood thiners dislodge the clot and that was it all over.
