    big guy, you need something that'll cope with a horse kicking it, I don't think rendered straw bales would.

    Lou, the other style I've seen (OK, I've seen several) is to use hardwood boards placed horizontally inside a channel at either end.
    This way you can cut the rotten one out at the base and slide the rest down to replace it and install a new one at the top.
    I've also seen pre-cast concrete panels used.

    Can't ask the boss ATM, she's already hit the sack.
    Yeah Rick we have been tossing this idea around too but with heavier sleepers not big railway ones but big enough that we can slot in between two pieces of C section

    I've builty and lined a few stables. Any ply, or timber for that matter will rot with time soaked with horse urine. You'd be best to build up a couple of courses of bricks and then have the form ply above that. It'll take a few boots before giving in and it's about as cheap as you'll get for the strength.

    Dunno about toxicity or any of that, but what about treated pine sleepers?

    Cheapest price I found would work out around $65 per 1200x2400x50mm.

    Supposed not to rot forever.

    don't have any experience with laying bricks so I'm not confident it will hold....apart form that I would like to keep to the frame idea as I should of mentioned I want to keep the stables removable for various reasons

    And if you want to save some more $$$ on the formply, go and have a chat to a builder at a decent commersial site that is just coming out of the ground, they may sell you some decent second hand sheets at a good rate. Sometimes if they haven't got another job to go straight to, it is cheaper for them to scrap it after only one use, than find somewhere to store it between jobs.

    If permapine is CCA treated stuff I would not use it on animal quarters.

    You will not get much cheaper than ply if you want to use wood, the concrete formwork stuff may well give you a bit more life due to the coating. Then again paint would probably give you a similar result.

    Other options are AC sheet or you could consider AC weather boards or they also sell a plastic form of weather board.

    Pine is generally a no no around horses, as if it cracks or splinters, you get big sharp stakes, which may end up stuck somewhere unpleasant in your favorite pony...

    Old conveyor belt is ideal for kick boards and the bottom of round yards to keep the sand in.
    Probably wont look as good but you will not beat it for kick boards as it takes the impact out for both stable and donkey.

    Dull you must be broke like me if you have horses but it keeps the wife off my back when spending dollars on fishing gear.

    Pilb I don't have them yet...hence why I want the place ready when I do as I know it will empty my wallet fast and I wont be able to afford to do anything other than burn the occasional match for light and eat rice crackers

    I knocked these two stables together for my neighbor, largest size without planning ,simply four panels bolted together sitting on a concrete base.The exterior boards were the cheapest wood effect hardiplank, interior just had a 12mm x 1200 high plywood sheet screwed to frame. Doors were made from a sheet of form ply sealed on all edges.
    Two horses and a pony share these, as of yet they have not kicked them,chewed them or peed all over the ply . The roof area gives plenty of water to the tank.
