I just went outside and gave my leaky smelly funny-noisy '83 Rangie a big tonguey kiss.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

To get the key into the OFF position, the transmission must be in the PARK position.

The key was in the ON position and the transmission was in DRIVE.

That situation makes the RR one deadly vehicle.

Have Land Rover been contacted about this? If so what did they say?

I'm pretty sure it couldn't happen to my SIII but even if it did at least I'd still have steering and the ability to change gears, that's the deadly part of the problem, the other deadly part would be an increased suicide risk when confronted with the repair bill

Exactly what you'd expect I imagine.

    "it doesn't do that"

Next email "Did it do that"

    Next "You contacted us when"

"it may do that, IF, the alt fails, it's dark, your wifes driving, and you've left the wheel lock key in the back and it's a diesel"

    Hello Tim,

I have just read this thread for the first time and at the risk of providing Superquad with another opportunity to put down all things LR and tell everyone how great his 'old Paj' is I thought I'd do a bit of a follow up.

If you don't mind me asking what was the out come of all of this? Did the alternator repair fix the issues or was it something else?

Also you were very unhappy with the steering lock and how potentially dangerous it was when there is a power failure. Did you in the end write or call LR as you said you would and what was the outcome?

Hard to imagine that having the steering lock when the power system fails when driving isn't considered as a serious saftey issue that needs resolving asap. Mind you I bet there are plenty of other modern vehicles that have potentially similar issues or had the same thing happen but because few vehicle brands have a forum like this to air their issues it never becomes public.

I look forward to reading what the outcomes were as this has potential knock on safety ssues for many others.

PS ...if you really want to get rid of the 'pussbox RR' as you put it and the many electrical issues that it has then I have a D1 that is good off road has no electrical issues as the Lucas coil was replaced with a Bosch unit so all the electrical upgrades have been undertaken and I'm prepared to do you a favor and swap it for your Voque if that assists you in any way.

    cheers,
    Terry

I have been looking at a few L322s and asking lots of questions about the place.
It seems that the Alternator is a major issue with the L322.
Having them in a pretty much sealed case doesnt seem to be a good idea in a hot country like ours.

Hi Terry and I have only just received the bill.

I had a number of things done while it was in being fixed, including a full service and new brake pads all round and the bill came to $3,400 ( and I think I was given a pretty good discount for mates rates ), with the alternator repair costing $380 and most of the rest of the bill was for the labour to dismantle and reassemble the front end to be able to get at the alternator.

As to the Steering lock, while it was definitely locked with the key still in the ignition, in the ON position, on the night the RR failed, I have since tried countless times to get it to lock again and it has not.

So I don’t really know what to do.

As far as getting rid of the RR goes, my mechanic services heaps of rare and odd vehicles and reckons mine is probably on of the most reliable, so I guess I’ll stick with it for a while longer.

Pity. I would have taken it off your hands and only charged you for travel to the coast and a carton of ginger beers.
