G'Day, lotsa-landies, don't know about an igloo, does a white disco count? I think one of the reasons knives were scarce at school in the 60's is, we couldn't afford them.[ and our parents would have skinned us alive, cant touch kids now, thats progress, I guess] When I came down from the bush and attended Stafford Heights State School, my Mum dressed me up, my best shoes, etc. I walked through the gate, was set upon by some barefooted boofheads and copped a flogging for putting on airs. Luckily my four cousins were at the same school, and came to the rescue. We were all called up to the office, the others got 6 cuts each, I got 3, the head said he was taking it easy on me because it was my first day! you beauty! We fought before , at breaks, and after school quite often, but you know, as long as it was a fair fight, no one seemed to mind. I still say knee jerk reactions like banning hoodies are not the answer Bob

It hardly fits into the category of a knee jerk reaction.

It was employed successfully in the UK six years ago. (See my earlier post for the link.)

Rules and regulations need to change as the world changes. We didn't need traffic rules until there was some traffic. All that has happened is that hoodies have become more common lately and someone has finally noticed the way in which they make CCTV security ineffective. So they have just applied the same logic to hoodies as to other ways in which people might conceal their identities in places where that creates security issues.

So it is not a knee jerk reaction. It is just an attempt to improve the existing principle of the need to be able to identify people in some locations.

I think I have the answer. How about, say, we make all Jews wear star of David badges, Christians small crosses sewn into their clothing, native born Aussies the Government arrow , and so on. If they refuse to tow the line, we put them into detention centres ..........Hmmmmm ,its got merit Bob

In relation to knives at school.....

I remember taking a knife (little pearl handled pocket knife) to school when I was about 8 or 9 (1970's), but that was to cut up my apple, pear or whatever - then maybe to whittle a few sticks when playing armies in the dirt with my mates.

Then as a teenager took fixed blade knives to cadet camps - just after Rambo (1) came out. Again, it was part of the Army 'look' for a young fella and to carve a few bits of stick after running around Singleton collecting spent .308 rounds and making (used) ammo belts...

Not once, never did I ever think of threatening, let along hurting anyone with those knives.

Now, as a grown up, if I carry a knife without a lawful reason - and the Police have cause to stop/search me - I cop a $550 fine!

It's not the knives, the kids or the Police - it's letting things get out of hand BEFORE they get their hands on something that can do anyone harm. It's lack of discipline and respect for other people and their property. Lack of respect for rules.

So, if asking/telling someone to obey the rules - not have your face obscured or hidden when you walk into a premises - then just do it and stop being a whinging obnoxious brat. If you don't like, bugger off and live in a place where you just do what you want, when you want and see how your long your 'rights' last. Rules are for the benefit and security of the community.

    Rant, yep....

The dishes are waiting in the sink now - I'm off.

    Matt.

And THE point is, before our kids got caught up in this U.S rap crap, kill the cops , hate your parents bull****, did we have this problem? The children of the day are the result of the previous generation, thats where the example is set, the standards for the children are set.Look in the mirror, home boy, hope you like what you see. And I tend to disagree to a point with you, but that's another story.

Point is we are now in this generation and time as in now, and now you are being asked to remove your hoody while inside a shopping center or shop - for security reasons - so why are you so hell-bent on being offended??? Remove it and be done, once outside you can go back to being anonymous and shielded from the world.
Same with speed cameras, radar's, RBT's, child "disciplining", etc etc - we are living now and have to abide by the rules, whether you like it or not.
Fortunately I raised my son to love his family, abide by the rules, be polite and respect the cops - I tried to be the example....... some people just don't bother. They can live with their own consequences.
