Thread: Carbon Tax. Well someone had to bring it up!

Why is this not in the "soapbox" already?

Or is it just that it has been bashed to death there we may get a different public here? one that doesn't contirbute to the "Liberal voting 2GB listening right wing gun totting ban the burqa freedom of speech as long as it's mine budgie smuggler wearing" group!

And yes, I do like a nice and lively debate as much as the next soapboxer...

This debate sure gets them out of the closet. On the ABC online the subject was opend for a short time for public comment.

One of the "I'm alright and it makes me feel good caring for the environment" contributor suggested that we can offset the cost of the tax by all going out and buying appliances that use less power.

Now let me see. An average family sized refrigerator costs around $1,000, perhaps it will be 10% more efficient, the fridge is one of about 4 essential appliances (not including TV and aircon or heating), remember most households have already installed hi-efficiency lighting, so his rationale that to save less than about 2% of household costs we dispose of a working appliance and spend twice what the tax would impose.

Do they not realise that most people already consider the efficiency of new appliances, but buying new does not offset carbon because they are still made in China or other excessive CO2 producting countries and shipped to Australia using CO2 producing ships and transport.

Just my two cents worth, but why doesn't all this carbon escape through that hole in the ozone layer that we were warned about?

This tax is simply a tax... Nothing more.... Do we fly less because of fuel excise? Do we drive less?

And the words "On average" well guess what city dwellers... People outside your concrete village dont fit into the average model...

We have increased transport costs, fuel, food, building materials.... For us the impact is well above average...

Sorry but this is all ****....

Whilst we live in a Capitalist society / world we can NOT have a reduction... It defies economics...

New car... New TV.... New phone.... etc etc....

Reduce pollution... BUY LESS OFTEN.... Its the ONLY way... Consume less, want for less, re-use more.... Just like Great Grandad did
