Ok, after a very long 4 hours in the freezing cold, I managed to get some more pics of it on the move. The quality isn't brilliant, but with no flash, and frozen hands, it was the best I could do.

so, how do they maintain 50?
do the trucks just pick a gear and set the cruise control?
do they have to synch gear changes?

From what I understand, the lead truck calls the shots. Gear changes, braking etc.

Mind you, last night, they were stopped for a bit, and when they started off again, the last 2 trucks were out of sync with their changes. So, I guess that they know their trucks, and the output.

The other thing that was that as they moved off, the last 2 were pulled off the line by the ones in front before they brought the revs up. Makes me wonder what kind of power the front trucks had...

So what your telling us not only did the Mack at the front have to push the Volvo at the front, it had to pull the other two as well???

The Mack and the KW probably have an 18 speed main gearbox and a 4 speed joey box. I'm sure someone on here will know more.

Its not impossible that all four trucks have the same engines trannys and diffs,, (though not probable)

I would think the first two would do all the work,
the rears only needed on hills and for emergencies????

    Quite possibly, Mr Pedro.

When the rig was on its way to the LUP, they had 3 trucks up front, and 2 at the back. The road on the way there is fairly hilly, so there certainly would have been a need for some extra pulling power.

Each of the axles on the trailer has its own set of brakes, so, in theory stopping shouldn't be a big issue. Relatively speaking, of course.

And, as far as the KW vs White vs Volvo vs Mack debate goes, I know next to nothing about trucks, so cant help you there, Mr D Ute....
