Porta-Boat??
Hi all
We are considering purchasing a Porta-Boat (www.porta-bote.com.au) We are towing a 20ft van with a TD5 Disco and would like to do a bit of fishing, lakes, rivers and the sea (not to far out). This looks like the ideal solution, will fit on the roof rack, light enough for both of us to lift off and carry to the water. We both have bad backs and getting a tinny off the roof would be too much.
It would also fit inside the van while travelling eliminating the drag on the roof rack, Combined with a small outboard this looks like a good thing? Would not even need a boat ramp, just pull up near the river or beach unload carry, drag to the water and off we go.
Has anyone owned one? are they anygood? worth the money??
Any feedback would be great.

My ex father inlaw had one and I thought it was pretty good, setup was a little long than I thought but suit him to the ground. He had an electric motor with a couple of batteries. It was mounted to the side of the van using nut serts and backets

I'm seriously considering buying one off a friend's Dad for my upcoming journey.
Apparently they're a lot more stable than many might think, and sell with a 10 year warranty. They also plane at fairly slow speeds.

Well, I guess the idea of a Flatout Boat' looked good until they replied (very promptly I might add) to my email. They are no longer building/supplying them. They are trying to sell the business.
The price up until they stopped production was $3,750, bit pricey anyway I would have thought.

I was in a similar situation but with a smaller budget. Ended up buying a used canadian canoe, replaced the gunwhales, gave it a new gel coat and purchased a new honda 2.3hp 4stroke. All up cost <$1400. The 15" canoe weighs in at 32kg. It suits our needs well - just sight-seeing for 2 adults and 2 kids, or room for two plus fishing gear. Additional drag with the canoe on the roof is berely noticeable at 90-100km/hr (our van is 18.5" poptop) but I need to allow a little more distance to overtake at these speeds.

Wardy,
Thanks, funny that they can return an email but not alter a website
The only negative with the Portabote is that it can't outrun an angry croc, so I ended up carting around a proper roof mounted boat on my last big trip up North.
