    DRIVING LIGHTS

In another thread on HID lights it was suggested that driving lights are not allowed on the roof. I have heard this before and have often wondered whether this is correct. So to avoid a thread hijack I thought I would start another.

In the other thread someone posted a link to the ADR's of vehicle lighting. Although you almost need a law degree to decipher a lot of this stuff, from what I can make of this there is nothing to say that you can't have them on the roof.

It also says that you can only have two or four. I am now wondering how does an LED light bar with say 32 leds get categorized. Is it one light or 32?

Below is an extract from the ADR.

    Dave.

    7.3. DRIVING LAMPS
7.3.1. Presence: Optional on motor vehicles. Prohibited on trailers.
    7.3.2. Number:
    7.3.2.1. Two or four.
7.3.2.2. To be used in conjunction with headlamps.
    7.3.3. Arrangement:
    No individual specifications
    7.3.4. Position:
7.3.4.1. In width no individual specifications.
7.3.4.2. In height: no individual specifications.
7.3.4.3. In length: at the front of the vehicle and fitted in such a way that the light emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly or indirectly through the rear-view mirrors and/or other reflecting surfaces of the vehicle.
    7.3.5. Geometric visibility:
    No individual specifications.
    7.3.6. Orientation:
    Towards the front.
    7.3.7. Electrical connections:
The driving lamps must be able to be lighted only when the main-beam headlamps switch is in the “lamps on” position.
    7.3.8. Tell tale: No requirement.
    7.3.9. Others:
The aggregate maximum intensity of the main-beam headlamps as specified in paragraph 6.1.9.1 of Appendix A, can be exceeded with the fitment and illumination of driving lamps. Driving lamps do not have to comply with ADR 46/….

Your opening a can of worms everybody has their own idea of whats legal but I think you need to find what vic roads says as it is a little different in each state and the ADR,s are different again. In NSW I believe lights above the centre line of your head lights are illegal but some cars come from the factory with roof mounted spotties (jeeps)

Good idea to start a thread Mr Whippy!

I am sure the QLD modification rules used to specify a height limit, but no more it seems. The ADRs specify a height limit for dipped beam lights though. Some states may choose to apply the dipped beam height - though this may be a misconception also.

    http://www.vacc.com.au/Portals/1/pdf...ad-vehicle.pdf

However I note that 2 of the main/driving beam rules are:
they must be fitted to the "front" of the vehicle
No wider than the dipped beam lights.

Above the roof on a normal control landie could not be classed as the "front" . They would be "forward facing" but that would be it. They could also be considered to ostruct the view of the driver (as deemed by the officer giving you a ticket).

e.g. this would be illegal as the centres of the outer lights are spaced further out than the headlamps:

(also 2 lights too many and not fitted to the "front" of the vehicle).

Years ago in NSW at least there used to be a maximum of 6 lights in total. Rally cars would sometimes have standard high beam lights removed so that 4 driving lights could be fitted. I had to remove a 3rd centre driving light from my 4-headlight Fiat 125 to comply with the 6-light rule.

    WHY?????

Are you wanting to drive a carnival, or is it like most, all show. If you've ever had a light bar, or LED spot/floods, you'll soon realise that you don't need all those lights up there as the light from the LED's is more than enough off road.

For the purpose of issuing tickets then it would count as 32 lights. For the purpose of purchase 1 and fitment 32.

One of my reasons for starting this thread is that I plan to get an LED bar with the group buy if it goes ahead, and I will be mounting it on the roof until I am told by Mr Plod to remove it.

I did once see a ute that had a roof mounted set up on a hinge with some air operated struts to hinge the lights up when in use. So during the day when they can be seen they were pointing straight at the sky.

I want them not because I'm a tough city driving wannebee but because I live in the middle of bugger all and buy having four I can have two forward shining down onto the road showing ruts/holes and two angled outwards showing whats coming onto the road giving me more reaction time. Pat
