Just goes to show, vehicle designers have learned a thing or two. That is very impressive.

It is quite a common misconception that older cars were tough and that "they don't make them like they used to".

What people forget is that by deliberately making the ends crumple, there is less force transferred to the passenger compartment.

Having sturdy ends means that a lot more of the force of the impact carries through to the passenger compartment instead of being dissipated, so the passenger compartment suffers more damage and so do the passengers.

There are a lot of other aspects of the design that help too, but that is the obvious one that people misunderstand.
