Thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions.
We'll look into each one and let you know where we end up.
My self and family do the snow thing every year on the cheap.
Just a weekend trip from Nowra/Sydney.
We are doing it this weekend comming.
We travel via Snowy MT highway and play at Kiandra , just for the kids and that section of the park costs nothing as it is a though highway.
Mt Selwyn is very close by if you want to ski, but you pay to get to Selwyn and then to use the faciities...chair lift.
We stay Saterday night at Cooma where prices are good and you can get a good feed.
Sunday can be a slow senic trip home as I find a day in the Snow is enough for my self and the kids.
Or Sunday can be a trip Thedbo and pay for a days parking and then strike out and go to the top of Aust via chair lifts etc..
Travel home exhausted late sundaty night.
Cooma is not a bad spot for fuel as there is a few servos to choose from.

Better hurry up then, Lots of people whinging about it is the end of the season as the snow is slush. All I know is it is wet, white and cold.
We spent a few winters at Tumut in Snowy Mountain Lodge which was ex-Snowy Hydro accommodation. Lodge style for large groups (30+) also self-contained for families. Snow play and skiing at Mt Selwyn.
We decided that Mt Hotham would be our destination. To keep the accommodation costs to a minimum, we are staying in Bright which is only around 45mins from the mountain.
We arrived yesterday to quite summery conditions (26deg) and after an overnight storm headed up to the snow this morning hoping we'd find more than slush.
It started snowing as we were driving up and snowed for the entire day! Excellent snow for the kids (up to 25cm where we were playing) and being the week before the Vic school holidays, there were very few people there.
This weekend has been declared the end of the snow season but still heaps of snow to play in.
Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. Your help is very much appreciated.

Try the sub alpine towns. A mate and his family [4] stayed at Snowview in Mount Beauty near Falls Creek recently for $100 a night. Mounty Beauty Accommodation | Snowview Holiday Units
We are having a cold snap today but it is almost all over Rover for the snow this season. Check out "snow cams" on Google before heading off. Some decent rains & it's gone.
Fly to the USA any time after late November and anywhere north of I80. Snow? How much you want? Probably cheaper than going to rip-off resorts in OZ.

Here's a picture from Tuesday while the last of the snow was falling.
The areas that were shin deep in snow on Tuesday are disappearing quickly.
