Step by step directions to get through Sydney.

Hi everyone, I have a little favour to ask for anyone who knows Sydney well. SWMBO is going on a road trip on her motor bike in a few weeks (A mid life crisis ride - she is turning 40 soon)

She will be travelling up from Melbourne on the Hume, and needs to get through Sydney and onto the Pacific Highway, then she will be riding on a semi direct route from there up to Brisbane and Bunderburg. The route she has chosen, is because of friends she wants to see and stay with along the way, so I'm not after ideas on a more direct or easier run up to Queensland, but some simple step by step directions that will get her through Sydney.

She has no dramas about riding in the traffic or anything - she commutes on the bike in Melbourne traffic every day, and has a lot of KM & experience under her belt - but she has never driven or riden in Sydney, and neither have I, so we have no idea when looking at a map which route would be the simplest. She plans on getting into the outer metropolitan area about 10 to 11am to avoid peak hour, and to ride straight through and out the other side.

Can anyone help by pointing the way?

    Thanks heaps - Gav.

The westlink M7 is the best way around Sydney -- fully electronic toll though, she will need a tag or phone and pay prior, maybe later also.

M5, M7, M2 pennant hills road and onto the F3.

The Federal or Hume highway turns into the M5 at campbelltown, go left onto the M7 keep going as it merges into the M2. Go left on pennant hills Rd and head for the F3 or Gosford signs. The Vic electronic tags work in NSW.

    Hope. She enjoys the ride.

I did it last month in my 101 (opposite direction) , yes take the tollway.
You have to do about 10km or so on the local (4 lane) roads (Cumberland Hwy), that are usually busy then back onto the freeway out of Sydney.

For someone who was not a local (like me) it paid to carry a map because, although there is only a couple of turns, it isn't all that well signposted.
(They rely on people knowing where the hell all the suburbs are. )

Take a small map or do a printout on Google Map of the section from Penant Hills to Wahronga.

It's no worse than driving in Melbourne. (Perhaps the lanes are a little skinnier) Most of it is freeway now

Do they toll motorbikes in NSW? They are free on tollways in VIC.

Hi Gav and as above is the simplest way to go, just be on the ball for the Pennant Hills road exit off the M2 but otherwise a straight foreword run. In other words, boring.

If she is a bit adventurous and depending on the time of day, stay on the M7 and follow the signs to Sydney and then once in the Eastern Suburbs tunnel, follow the signs for the Cahill Expressway.

This will take her over the Harbour Bridge. If she has never been over the coat hanger, it’s well worth the detour and it will make those Melbourne bridges look like nothing more than puddle jumpers.

Once over the bridge, it’s a bit of a run on the other end of the M2 then exit onto Pacific Highway, and stay on it to the F3 at Hornsby and she is on her way north again.

Thanks - I've just suggested that to her, and she likes that idea.

confucious calling?? do not use m7 for this route.

if wanting to drive over the hanger then it is hume, m5, eastern distributer, follow signs for harbour bridge then keep following signs for newcastle.
a print out off google/bing at minimum, one of them bike gps units even better.

tolls just check rta website, should have the links, via the harbour bridge uses the most toll roads.

According to the Westlink M7 toll brochure http://www.roam.com.au/resources/fil...6201181222.PDF "Westlink M7 prices are the same for all types of vehicles."

In the RTA FAQ it also suggests there are special pouches for tags on motorcycles Welcome to Sydney Motorways On the M2 a motorcycle is classified as a 2 axle vehicle (unless a monomotorcycle)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
