I bought a set of Maxtracks last week from ARB ($265 with Club discount). I have been putting off getting some mainly due to the cost - they used to be over $350.
However last year I got stuck in a basic situation on the side of the road without any gear (was not 4wding) where these would have been helpful.
I have not used them but have seen them used - convenience of carriage and use is the main thing. Likewise I have seen the milk crates used on Stockton but they failed miserably - if the joining straps did not break the plastic crate material where the joining straps joined then did - actually I though the individual segments of crate not joined together would have worked better.
When I used to take my D1 on 9 mile beach just south of Newcastle I would often get stopped as the sand is usually very soft and I found the car mats and some old doonas I kept in the back worked well and I was always able to get myself out - just might have taken a couple of times.
