Mine used 75 litres from Birdsville to Mount Dare heading east west on the french line in what was pretty soft sand. 2nd gear high range basically all the way.
I took 200 litres!
Anyone taken a Td5 Defender across the Simpson? What sort of fuel economy can I expect? I'm thinking of allowing 20l/100km (plus a reserve). Worst it has ever done is 15, towing a heavy camper trailer in a 30kt headwind on the road. Is this being too optimistic? Haven't done a long desert trip in this one.

My Tdi did from Mt Dare with a full tank and four Jerries to Birdsville with more than enough to spare. Pat
That should give you a pretty good safety margin.
On a Madigan crossing a few years ago my Td5 used about 17l/hundred. And some of that was cross country. It used 165 litres for around 930 k's travelled and I had 220 litres on board.
