That is new car sales Australia wide. Property prices in Sydney are still eye-watering.

My son lives in Crow's Nest. Every time I visit I notice the numbers of very expensive cars in the district, Porsche, Audi, Bentley, etc. Plenty of restaurants, up-market bottle shops. A friend's wife manages a mid to low-upper price ladies wear shop for a national chain. The chain had a record year last year.

Not really representative of Sydney let alone Australia.

I live in Canberra and I've seen 1 Porsche and no Bentlys.

There will always be people doing it OK and some faking that they are OK. But I think that generally people are being more guarded with their money.

The fact that people will not pay the 2008 boom prices shows that peoples attitudes have changed. The vendors that do not need to sell are happy to keep their prices high for now.

It will be interesting to see if the prices stay the same in the next 3-6 months,or whether there will be an adjustment when vendors need to or are forced to sell.

Crow's Nest may not be Mt. Druitt but neither is it Killara or Bellevue Hill. A tidy middle-upper middle class suburb, not billionaire country like nearby harbourfront suburbs.

Livable units there start about $600,000 which is pretty much the norm in Sydney's reasonable suburbs.

I'm not in a union and have worked for myself for the last 30 years doing various things (very various).

In the last 3 weeks I've done everything from tech assistance on assessing freshwater fish populations to fixing 'hard' home reno probs for a restoration business.

Been paid between $40 per hour and $1300 per day depending on client, plus GST.

All I can say is be flexible, do the work, deliver the goods, don't go for the throat and all will good.

    cheers, DL

Conclusions on the state of the nation can't be drawn from our personal experience or one particular stat (car sales etc...). The country isn't in recession, that is clear, but it is not in a growth phase either (overall).

The bottom line is that we spent our way out of the 'GFC' and now it's time to save again. People who dodged the bullet and prospered during the last 5 years or so will still be out buying cars, houses and whatever else. Others wont be.

The national property market is static, but there are still pockets of huge growth in areas with high demand (minerals industry mainly). Other pockets are in free fall.

My point is that it's not as simple as some pundits would have us believe.

    cheers,

    Adam
