No. What I am saying is that four wheels on the ground is better than three. If traction control fails with open diffs and short travel suspension, and wheels are lifting then it's back to 2WD or 0WD.

Our D2a has TC and it's excellent but I don't see it as an alternative to 4 wheels on the ground.
With the D2a I've had ABS and hence TC fail on a number of occasions whilst towing on loose dirt roads. Having the ABS fail is actually a bonus when pulling up on loose dirt, losing TC is an inconvenience. If I had to rely on TC to overcome wheel lift and hence forward momentum I reckon it would be a problem.

Nothing wrong with the design Pricey, it's the dipstick behind the wheel that's the problem here.
When I say nothing wrong with the design I mean the fan design, not the crummy front diff, power steering pump, track difference, V8 diesel or 3l V6 HiLux etc ..etc ..etc .:D:D:D

All models have there good and bad points.
In the drive way parked beside a Landy is a jeep wangler rubicon. and I have 1960 Cj 6 parked in the garage too.
The rubicon with its 3.6 V6 petrol gets 12l per 100 km on the highway and its fitted with a full lenght roof rack.
factory front and rear lockers , factory sway bar disconnects from the cabin, 78 to one low range first and I personally know it crosses creeks with water lapping over the bonnet(no snorkel), factory rock sliders and it flexes well too.
It has enough room to swing a spanner and so far has not missed a beat.
The yanks do do good vehicles.
I love landrovers, but I can think of many design problems with them.
It always pays to keep a open mind.
It looks like a another jeep will be coming in the family soon in the form of a grand cheerokee, after driving a few V6 diesel ones recently, they are very good on and off road.
Landrovers will have a certain something the japs and americans cannot offer
, but they need to lift their game in many ways.

There would never have been a Landrover if it was not for the Jeep,
infact the Landrover prototype had all jeep chassis and mechanicals.

If there was never a Landrover there would still have been a LandCruiser because the Toyota BJ was also a jeep copy

So Jeeps can't be all bad, except my son in law says his new jeep is the worst car he has ever owned!!! (then again he could NEVER live with a Landy - he don't know a spanner from a hammer, he took it to the dealer to get a brake light bulb replaced)

Its worth to note that jeep are now selling 2wd models that look the same as the 4wd models and some of the line up is now aimed at the soft roader market and entry level buyers..........I think 25 k on road.

Like Land Rovers Jeeps have excellent offroad gear that can be bought over the counter,I know 6-7 owners in Newman and one nurse I work with has a very tidy Rubicon. Pat

At a trail I wish I still had my tj in the shed :(

Landies are nice but jeeps are awesome :)

And so are Toyota (kluger), Misubishi (Challenger and Outlander), VW (2wd Toureg is coming) plus a few ithers I can't think of right now.
Funny thing is that in 1989 when I bought my first 4wd (GQ) I looked at a lot of Pajero's that were the favourite 'shopping trolley' at the time and said then, they should take out all the 4wd gear and sell it as a great family wagon...... someone must have heard me :twisted:

Could'nt agree more...

I bought my 89 Paj as a work/city runabout, from a business run by a couple of mates.... both their wives were NOT impressed,as they loved it for the same reasons..commanding driving position, great visibility, practical square-ish shape makes it easy to drive and park, heaps of rear seat room = lots of floor-space for the shopping bags when they did'nt want to put them in the back. !:D

It's a sign of the times.

I think it was their head engineer about fifteen/twenty years ago said that there would never be a Jeep under his watch that couldn't negotiate the Rubicon Trail.

My first car was a '74 CJ-6 that'd been thoroughly abused on a farm before I bought it.

I wish I still had it.
