Yes, unfortunately the old adage "no such thing as bad news" applies here.

I read they both telephoned him and apologised. Of course, he accepted.

I think this is the point they miss. It is not just Corporal Ben that they have offended. I think the apology should be a little broader

As the initial anger fades, and my blood pressure decreases, I think think you've got a valid point here. The insult wasn't only to Cpl Roberts-Smith and the Defence Force but to every Australian citizen (effectively) who he represents. (ie. you spit on Cpl Roberts-Smith you spit on us all.)
On reflection one aspect of the whole sordid affair that I find strange is that George Negus, previously a well respected TV journalist (if this isn't an oxymoron) has overnight morphed into a scumbag.
Yummi Stynes, is this a real name or one of those made up TV 'personas', is obviously your typicall TV dumb bimbo with an IQ approaching that of a garden slug (but not quite there yet). But George has been around for a while and doesn't have a history as an insensitive dill.
Whilst 'The Circle' may give the impression that it's an 'off the cuff' program totally ad-libbed this is not reality. This program runs to a script. To me the big question here is who fed George the line which led to the bimbos 'dud root' response. Sure George should have been smart enough to see it coming, but he didn't. I reckon he's been stitched up by totally amoral Channel 10 desperate for ratings.
Is the clip I saw of Yum-Yum where she tearfully apologises to Cpl Roberts-Smith and in the same breath announces that she has proposed to her boyfriend, complete with crocodile tears for real ? If so I hope he's smart enough to decline.

Exactly......the show is 'scripted'. The producer/s and media luvvies would already have a programme sheet to follow. And no show is ever 'live', there is the delay. Ever since the 'crow' call on the Graham Kennedy Show all TV (worldwide) now has a panic button.

So, methinks this was probably not the end result they wanted but the intent was there.

I think you give them all too much credit.

It's not scripted - they rely on the shot gun approach to journalism - just waffle on long enough and something will be either:

    • interesting
    • controversial
    • informative
    • confronting
    • humorous

    or OFFENSIVE

George has done some fantastic stuff over the years and should have known better, can't speak for the others - just FM radio with pictures.

Without something interesting to say they feel they must make a joke to keep the show moving along, problem is Journalists and TV show jocks aren't always that funny - no doubt that is why they recruited Colin Lane (From Lano and Woodley fame).

People will think Yumi was bullied by us internet nasties and have sympathy for her and her tears.....the sad thing is many will never realise why this "joke" was so offensive to many of us.

I have made my little protest by not watching Ch10 since .....(don't watch the others either but shhhhhh.)

That is not a way to protest as there is not a direct impact on the station.

The way to do it is contact the sponsors and advertisers and complain to them and indicate that you will boycott their products if they don't bring pressure to bear on the station.

Good to see Mitsubishi Australia and Swisse have pulled their sponsorship of the show.

It would be better if they pulled their ads on the station.
