As to respect for your elders didn't the boomers show the way with the 60's hippie's ,70's punks and their care for the previous generation with health and pension real world cuts along with love for the next gen with yank style education bills for uni and insufficient development approval's pushing land and housing prices up to make it unobtainable for most to buy a home in the burb they grew up in.
sorry that would of been me... only posted it to get people thinking about it... and also someone brought up people who do small "green" things to make themselves feel better. i simply offered something that can make a real contribution to being environmental. but of course everyone is in denial...

you can be as "green" as you want. have solar panels, drive a electric car, ride to work, catch public transport, recycle everything, drink from a tap, have energy saving light bulbs, use the green shopping bags and build a energy saving house that doesn't need air conditioning...

but if your diet consists of lots of meat you use allot of animal products the vegan that lives next door who doesn't do any of the "green" things listed above will properly have a smaller environmental footprint then you.

it is a FACT that nuts, seeds, legumes, fruit and vegetables require less water, less land, less time, less resources and costs less money to feed and cloth a single person.

and that's without even getting into how much animals suffer for the human race...

genocide? really? hahaha you were only going to kill them for your own benefit anyway...
if you stop eating animals you simply stop BREEDING THEM!

Ha you sound like a uni student studying sustainability. Been there done that too
Want to lower your environmental footprint? Eat whatever cats and dogs you keep as pets and don't replace them. Once they are gone, your impact will be significantly reduced.

Besides, I thought much of WA was disappearing overseas anyway.
Yes, and in fact I just won the tender to run the jetski concession when the new Lake Forrest opens up in the middle of the Pilbara in ten years.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Sorry I don't see you as the Messiah you profess to be. Just because not everyone supports what you see as fixing the world, doesn't mean that we're all in denial. I'm in no denial at all. Unless someone can show me irrefutable proof that the world is in 'global warming', I will continue to 'disbelieve'.

If you now go on to mention Al Gore, I'll know you're not serious, and laugh at everything you say from now on.

I'll add that I recycle, only switch lights on when needed, energy saving light bulbs and other devices, 'green' shower heads, etc, etc. Not because I 'believe' but because of waste reduction, $$$ savings, etc.

it is a FACT that nuts, seeds, legumes, fruit and vegetables require less water, less land, less time, less resources and costs less money to feed and cloth a single person.
And the irrefutable proof of this is, where exactly??

How much land do you think it would take to grow all this stuff, to feed the world??

and that's without even getting into how much animals suffer for the human race...
    Here we go again...

Benz, I'd like to ask you a serious question - What are your thoughts on other Carnivores and Omnivores (or predators if you prefer)??

Should we try to convert the Crocodiles, Tigers, Lions, etc, etc. to become Vegans/Vegetarians as well??

depends on what side of the suppressing fire you're on.....

Poorly applied suppressing fire usually results in something entertaining when "reload" is given.

Again for what it is worth, Wikipedia gives the 2% growth as being the growth in the tonnage of fodder, not the proportion of grain used - and growth of grain production is much higher in the last couple of years due to good seasons in several countries. It should also be noted that a significant proportion of grain used as fodder is not considered fit for human consumption (e.g. a significant part of the last Australian harvest due to rain during harvest).

But short term proportions are probably not very useful anyway, because, as you probably know, grain production figures vary greatly from year to year, both up and down.

While it is likely that use of grain for animal fodder will increase as the population of India and China in particular raise living standards, this does not necessarily affect the amount of grain available for direct consumption. For many people in the world the grain produced by Australian farmers, for example, (or any that is internationally traded) is totally unaffordable - and few Australian grain farmers are what anyone would call wealthy, particularly after nearly ten years of drought. (Their bank managers might be!)
