I would not be interested in a 2nd hand Defender or 110.
It would have to be a new Puma. MR Automotive had an auto conversion for earlier Defenders or 110 I think. Dunno if he does one for the Puma.
Doh, I suppose I could ask. I dont know what stuff would be available to convert a Puma to auto ?
Yes Jon , ideal for running around near home which is where we spend most of our time, it seems. But when going bush, we have to get there first. Pumping the old leg up and down thousands of times on the clutch is a waste of energy and these days I would need a longer afternoon nap. Of course you can only use cruise when applicable, I know.
I thought long and hard about getting a RR Sport but decided not because of all the electrical crap that I dont understand much about. Love my D1.
I have thought about getting a TDI with auto rebuilt and replacing the V8
in my Disco with it. That would take time and I dont want to take the Disco of the road for any length of time as it is my daily and I would like something larger that I could sleep in if wet out and carry enough to allow me extended trips. I know I could use a camper treailer or tent etc, but these things are not invisible. For instance, when I visit the Alice and places like that I camp some K's out of town out of site where possible, in my swag.
If I have to kip along the side of the road somewhere I sleep in the vehicle
and dont attract attention from THEM who like to insist that I cant or need a Permit or have to pay. Up THEM. When I am on my own I never ever stay in towns.
I am on my own now and have no responsibilities, so I can take off any time I like for as long as I like. I have been all over Aust,. many times
living and working in the outback. The only place I havent been is around the Gunbarrell area and besides that I want to take one last trip all about and visit those places again. There is a lot of rocks that I have not sat on and tree's that I have not had a yarn with. As always I am not interested in meeting folk or visiting towns except to stock up.
A few years ago the Sister in law died and left Betty a GU Nissan with an auto box. We took it on a trip up to Cape York. ( the little Bird had not been up there. She loved it and gave a running comentary all the way ). I was wrapped in the auto box !!! Nissan was trouble free also and very capable for that trip up the telegraph track.
It was to big for Betty and her health had started to deteriorate and I didn't want it because I had my Disco, so we sold it.
Probably should have kept it now because it was big, tough, simple and reliable and could be serviced all over the place. But it wasn't a Landrover.
I will always keep my Disco for my number one but I need to give some more thought to a tourer and I am running out of time, eh.

Do a search in the Defender section on Puma auto conversion. I remember seeing something on it in NZ I think, but was not cheap.

I prefer manual for towing and technical off road.

Plenty of electrics in the Puma.

I can fit a single bed mattress in the back of my Puma with the second row of seats out.

To answer that question, I think it all depends on what you like. Some people will always like X brand no matter what. I had a fellow the other day come into my shop and start bagging my Defender. He started off with "Is that your mobile road block out there, errr sorry land rover" and it went down hill from there, I don't think there was any "colourful" words he did not use. After he finished his rant (About 5 - 10 mins) I just told him "I bought that vehicle as it suited MY needs and not his, and if he would like to give me $45,000 I would go out and by a Toyota landcruiser, but in all reality I could not see the justification in the huge price difference between the two.
Just to make sure he got the message I pointed him to a two part video I had just watched pitting a Defender against a Landcruiser, the result was "They are both about the same in preformance" so why the extra $40,000? Does it have $40,000 extra preformance NO. But he was dead set against the Land Rover saying they are the worst off road vehicle, to which I answered, that may be so, but just remember an old series 1 made it across some of the worst terain in Australia before any of the gunbarrel and other highways were made, so that is not bad going for a 4x4 that is suposed to be the "worst in the world". He just left in a huff after that.

I don't think i would have bothered giving him the chance to explain his gripe. it was never going to be rational anyway.
To say it's the worst 4wd is a pretty sweeping statement and like bourne from an opinion expressed by his mates.
your immediate answer should have been "have you ever driven one off road?" to which the answer would invariably be "wouldn't drive one of those pieces of @#$% if you paid me" at this point, you should have shown him the door.

That's just plain odd.

Rick,I was doing an oil change once in my front yard and a bloke pulled up and walked over,I thought he was going to ask for directions and proceeded to abuse me over the fence about what a POS my LR was,I said you pulled over to tell me that ****off,he then headed for the gate to come over but backed off when my red cattle dog arc up.Makes you wonder about people.
