    Classic Car Insurance

I have had my 101 insured with Lumley's Special Insurance since it has been on the road - their cover is very good - offering lots of extras for a very good premium. Shannons has been competitive on the quote but would never include wreck retention as part of my policy so I never went with them.

I have just received my insurance renewal from Lumley's and as I always do I rang around to get alternative quotes.

I rang NRMA Classic Insurance and they are happy to insure the vehicle as long as it is not used offroad - I indicated that there would be an expectation that any classic Landrover being a 4wd would be used offroad and they indicated they would not to be offered cover as their "classic" insurance was for onroad (includes dirt roads) use only.

So - be aware that if you are thinking of insuring with NRMA Classic then your vehicle may not be covered for offroad use.

I then rang the normal NRMA insurance area and they do not have my vehicle listed but do have a 101 caravan - after about 25 minutes on the phone they said that as it was a 77 model they could only insure it for $2000 . They had the correct vehicle because they googled it but clearly thought it would only be worth the same as an old 77 series 3 banger (sorry series 3 owners).

As Shannons are now offering me wreck retention it looks as if I will be changing to them.

So just make sure that if you are thinking of using NRMA Classic ensure it does meet your requirements.

The NRMA have obviously failed to properly think through or to plan this "initiative" .... the premium they offered me on the County was more than I pay them for standard comprehensive on the vehicle now - I obviously didn't take it any further and I don't know about the wreck retention feature with them either.

A lot of people I know use Shannons - I'll have to get around to taking a look at them...

I thought Shannons had "wreck retention" as standard. That is why I have the Mercs with them.

No - vehicle has to be over 35 years of age.

The Mercs and the Inter fit into that category.

Spoke to Shannon's again the other day when renewing my 101.

I am impressed that both times I have rang them recently, not only did the operator know what a 101 was, he threw in a few comments/questions that suggested he wasn't just reading it off the screen.

I have been happy with them so far, but the true test of an ins. company is when you claim....

I'm another one to say "It's gotta be Shannons" all the old cars in the family are with them, they are very good and exceptionally well priced, i'm even covered as a P plater. Mind you the cars arent driven that often and not exactly in peak hour traffic...

Would never change, noone beats them as they are there for the old cars and bikes.

    Cheers

They were good to me when my Alpina was keyed.. after I mentioned that only a few months prior they had judged me 2nd in class in the Shannons German Auto Fest.

I think they would have given me grief if I hadn't.

Likewise......which is why I'm leaving Shannons (have done already with the house, will do at the next renewal for our cars).
