I couldn't have a firm 'Top 10', but agree that all mentioned (Santana, Knopfler, Clapton, Hendrix etc) are all in there, but the two that sit firmly at the top of the tree for me are these gents:

    (Francis Rossi)

    (Rory Gallagher)

Don't get me wrong, he is one of my favourite artists....and I mean artist in the truest sense of the word because he makes fantasic sound from limited technical ability. I don't know if that makes him a great guitarist though. Thanks for the link, very good.
That is EXACTLY why he wins.
He can create something so full of emotion, so brain liquify-ingly good, and it's so simple!
Look at the Solos from "Comfortably Numb" which frequently are voted as the greatest guitar solos of all time.
They're not even a fifth as complex as your average Steve Vai or Joe Satriani riff, but they're so much better.
And Gilmour can be extremely technical.
That's evident in how he can produce so much with so little
The Phantom - Oslo Blue 2001 Td5 SE.
Half dead but will live again!

    Nina - Chawton White 2003 Td5 S

I agree. Just because somebody is technically brilliant doesn't always make them a better player. To me, somebody who can do a lot with only a little is more enjoyable than somebody who shreds their way down a fretboard

You might want to consider this fellow:

An Aussie, an unbelievable talent, and almost unknown here.

    You're welcome.

    Cheers,

    Adam
Absolutely! Geoff solo or with the his fabulous 'Souldiggers' - Mal Logan - Keyboard, Roger McLachlin - Bass, & Gerry Pantazis - Drums . . . all living Oz legends with more cred' than we've had hot dinners! What a shame we don't recognize our own. Geoff is big in the US, but as Adam says, almost unknown here. Check him out recently, when invited to jam with legends 'The Allman Brothers". "That's What Love Will Make You Do" Geoff Achison, Randall Bramblett w. Allman Brothers Band - YouTube

Another of ours is Jimi Hocking aka Jimi the Human, awesome Guitarist, has toured with Screaming Jets, but his own Bands better!! Take a look at this classic 80's footage with his band Spectre 7. The late great Josie Jason in action with Jimi - RIP Josie:-( Jimi the human & Spectre 7 - Edge of Insanity - YouTube

One to watch if you like solid rock guitar, is Shannon Bourne, who works Solo now when not playing with Chris Wilson. Here he is with Geoff Achison & Jimi Hocking, and Geoff's Rhythm section, Gerry Pantazis on Drums & Robbie Liddle on Bass - FANtastic! Gwyn Ashton, living in London for some years. Check out this Bio; he's played with the who's who of World Guitar Royalty! Gwyn Ashton International Recording Artist Official Website

Aussie legends: Ian Moss, Angus Young, Tommy & Phil Emmanuel, Phil Manning, Slava Grigoryan, Mark Lizotte, Jeff Lang, and of course we can't mention Oz Guitarists without Kevin Borich; our greatest Guitar legend, back in unbelievably good form, after beating cancer. Often with his Son Lucius on Drums, and always with Harry Brus on Bass. Check the 1st video out on this link '21st Century' KB at his best:-) Rock n Blues Video in the House of Kevin Borich

If you haven't heard of, or checked out, Melissa Etheridge's touring Guitarist, Pete Thorn, then do so, this guy is definitely up there with the Worlds Best Guitarists of the new millenium! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvzuPacALM8]Melissa Etheridge and Peter Thorn - YouTube[/ame]

Anyway, having digressed to promote some of Australia'a Best Guitarists today, I wholeheartedly support most of those Great Guitarists of all times, already nominated. In no particular order - Hendrix, Vaughan, Moore, Trucks, Gibbons, Santana, Page, Vai, Satriani, May.

Music is great for the Soul ~ Enjoy!
    Cate:-)

No, I believe that makes him a great song writer/composer. I think Comfortably Numb is one of the best guitar solo's ever recorded but you don't have to be a great guitarist to play it....I can play it so there is the proof . I think we are crossing our definitions of things. Perhaps a great guitarist is someone who can play almost anything thrown at him in much the same way that a lot of session muso's can. A great song writer/composer is a different animal altogether. Let's just agree that Dave Gilmore is very special.
