    I too,will observe Armistice Day over on Bribie Is.as I usually do, and remember my grandfather a WW1 and WW2 veteran,who passed away at 5.10am on the 11/11/1967 military to the core, born in Manchester England he migrated to Aust. in 1911,the son of a member of HM secret service,this we found out from his birth certificate,no wonder he kept a diary for his entire adult life, he taught me some of my core values.

    Also my father who signed up on 3/9/39 and de-mobbed in early 1947,I can just remember him coming home in his uniform when I was young.

    I also always remember this day. I have a grand uncle in the Meteren war cemetery, a veteran of 1st machine gun battalion. One day in the not too distant future I will get over there to visit his grave.
    Cheers......Brian

    Tomorrow will be a tough day for Nan as it will be the first time her dad (ex WW2 digger who passed about 8 weeks ago) will not be with us at the ceromony. Upto 4 generations of family have attended every Remembance Day, Anzac Day and Vietnam Vets Day since I can remember.

    My thanks to all those that take the time to honour thoses we have lost.

    RIP Wal.

    We always have a minutes silence and the last post piped through the PA at work as we should for a govt building. We also have a remembrance board in the foyer for all former employees who gave their life in service

    Personally I find it disrespectful when people continue talking on the phone during this.

    When I worked for the state govt nothing was done.

    But let us not forget this is the year we finished the current conflict in Afghanistan, physically at least, I fear some will be fighting it within themselves for years to come.

    Australian Service personnel Killed in Afghanistan - Lest We Forget

    • Corporal Cameron Stewart Baird MG, 2nd Commando Regiment, was killed by small arms fire during an engagement with insurgents on 22 June 2013.
    **Corporal BAIRD was Posthumously awarded a VC in 2014 for his actions leading up to his death**

    • Lance Corporal Todd John Chidgey, 2nd Commando Regiment, was killed by "Non-hostile - small arms fire" at Kabul on 7-01-2014.

    96 years ago the guns fell silent and the terrible war of attrition ended.

    LEST WE FORGET

    For the fallen

    With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
    England mourns for her dead across the sea.
    Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
    Fallen in the cause of the free.

    Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
    Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
    There is music in the midst of desolation
    And a glory that shines upon our tears.

    They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
    Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
    They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They sleep beyond England's foam.

    But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
    Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
    To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
    As the stars are known to the Night;

    As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
    As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
    To the end, to the end, they remain.

    Laurence Binyon (1869–1943)

    I'll be going to the cemetery where my fathers ashes are, and have a quiet moment with him at 11. am. QX52401, 2nd / 14th Australian Infantry Battalion
    I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

    A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    I've just set the alarm on my phone to remind me. I have a rep coming today with a 10 am appointment. He just rang and said he will be late and I told him if he is here when five to 11 comes he will be put on hold.
    Dave.

    I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    I'm not even Australian (only been here a couple of years) and I find it very sad if anyone couldn't take a couple of minutes to pay respects..... I myself will be...

    A couple of years ago we happened to be in London on Remembrance Day and happened to stumble onto the ceremony with the Queen and others. I'm not a royalist, but I have to say the ceremony was done beautifully. Very understated, respectful and moving - one of the highlights of our trip.
