Peanut butter on mouse traps works well.

I agree with goingbush that peanut butter is the bait of choice on traps. But I find Ratsak is the most effective - just put it where mice can get it but kids and dogs can't (cats won't touch it, nor will most native animals).

I found bacon rubbed with garlic and tied to the trap with cotton to be highly effective.

Tie the bait onto the trap with a little strip of ladies stocking, with the knot underneath. They get their nasty little Bucky beaver teeth stuck in the fibers and set the trap off when they try to tug them free. Bye Bye mousey.
An almond tied on thus with a few drops of sesame seed oil will kill many rotten rodents without the need to rebait, just remove carcase and reset.

You can buy electric shock traps that kill mice and rats very effectively, go ebay.us or try in Australia, to risky for me to use as a professional if a child or elderly person gets zapped. or you can go to a pesticide seller/produce store and buy DITRAC baits and splash a little vanilla essence on-works brilliantly

Rodents are averse to the smell of peppermint. Smear some cheap toothpaste around, particularly around holes and vents.
