Thread: Trophy dogs, and feral owners

Really sorry to hear, I hope your wife recovers well.
I can imagine both your opinions of this breed will now be damaged for years to come.

This is such a horrible, horrible situation. All because of some f&wit who does clearly not deserve the responsibility to own such a beautiful breed of dog.

NOW a innocent person has been injured and the dogs will be punished because of his putrid selfish and moronic approach to 'large dog' ownership.

Dog's are not born bad, just like humans. It is the first few crucial years of their life, and how they are treated that creates their personality and temper. And you need to remember, they are still dogs. Anytime we have visitors or kids around our dog I watch him at all times, not because he is dangerous, because I am a responsible owner.

And for everyone sharing their unhappy comments about the dogs behavior, shame on you all. I would be putting all blame on the owner and the disrespect he has shown in the upbringing of the dogs. The outcome will be - Dogs get uthanised and the &*^^%$&* of an owner will just go and buy another large breed and treat them poorly then claim Innocent when they act out again!

Note - NO breed is prone to biting, they can be trained or taught either way. - we have a 65 kilo Bullmastiff, they were originally bred to jump on who they were to attack and hold them down with their paws and mouth. Our Bullmastiff will not jump up on ANYONE ever, 'but they are prone to do that' Yeah right, it's all about training, training training. I never let him through a doorway before me, I never let him eat without my permission, I never yell and scream at him, I never hit him, I never stare in his eyes, I never box him or his face, I never play forcefully and if he gets carried away we stop and he is in the naughty corner bed - He may be fine to play rough with me, what about a 5yr old kid? what about my 55kg fiance. He is my responsibility.

People are so quick to blame a breed, it is not the breed it is the deed!

All because of owners like this, our beautiful natured and loving member of the family is listed on the 'dangerous dogs register'.

Owning a large breed dog is more responsibility than children! Treated poorly, and bought up a certain way they can be used as real weapons, and when activated they can be very powerful. And it can be as simple as neglecting time with them, or not including them as a member of the family.

In this situation, I would have taken to the owner, what a shameful disgrace of a dog owner, what gives him the right to own and ruin the lives of such beautiful creatures??

And to the 'ban cross breeding' response, incorrect. All breeds originated from cross breeding, and continuing with the same breed line for so many years for dogs just for our lifestyles we are literally breeding dogs into disease and pain - Look at great danes, humans have over bred them so far every single one lives a life of pain, just for our selfish reasons. That is the type of opinion that started this 'dangerous dogs register'.

i steer clear of all rotty's and german shepards....i just dont trust even tough i have never had a bad experience......

If the fun is in owning a dog, why not a small dog?
Sure, a Jack Russell will bite and it will hurt, but its not likely to kill/maim.

I have experienced the full gambit of dog behavior, from those well trained working dogs through to mutts that have never been on a leash.

The true test of a dog is to observe it when it thinks nobody is home. This is the hardest thing to persuade an owner, that their animal does not behave the same when they are not home.

I truly believe all dogs have a base nature they return to when they are cornered and in the fight or flight mode. This is when another side of the animal is revealed. This is where the dog Is exposed to a situation it has not been trained or exposed to and reverts to its base nature and bites, quite often just a nip but all dogs are capable of that. But if the animal goes into attack mode everything goes out the window. When was the last time you tried to get a pit bull, bull terrier, bull mastiff off another animal / person when they are in attack mode? Pray you never have to.

Unfortunately how often do you hear the following statement after a dog attack "s/he has never attacked or shown aggression before", small consultation for the victim.

As stated by rb30gtr vigilance around animals is a must, regardless of size (unfortunately the big are capable of more damage) and expose your animal to as many situations as you can in a controlled way. And every now and then park your car a street away and have a look and listen to what your dog does when your not home.

We are lucky that we don't have any of the following banned breeds,"Dogo Argentino", "Filo Brasileiro" "Japanese Tosa" and the "Presa Canario" the last one is a very old breed which was bred to assist slaughtermen to bring down and kill cattle

Also on the banned importation list is the "Americain Pit Bull Terrier" but it is/was a little late to ban them as the "recipe" was already known

no one in their right mind can deny that dogs go bad, just like humans and just about any other breed of beast does from time to time due to mental illness, their treatment or their environment.

funny how many consider bull terriers and the like to be extremely dangerous animals yet the stats show they are less dangerous than many common breeds and only as dangerous as the much loved border collie.

no matter what laws or how much people deprive other people of freedoms, there will always be deaths by misadventure, injury and disability due to lack of care and attention to animals and people alike.

personally i don't think any breed of working dog should be allowed to reside in urban areas but you can bet you bottom dollar their would be one hell of a hue and cry from the hobby breeding set over that idea.
