Harlie, we had our passat stop, in the driveway, I did some research to find what the cause may be. Found out there was an injector recall, rang the local VW dealer, had it towed there and they replaced all the injectors, and was good as new. Only problem was,we had no idea of this recall. Fwiw, its an 07 125kw dsg passat :)
Facts right?? Firstly I said nothing about the coroners report (the poor lady was in a petrol/manual - not effected by any recall), I said after the media started running stories.Quote:

Mate you're lucky you were at home. Bit like when my L322 wouldn't go, was in the garage - failed inline fuel pump, just doesn't feel like a break down when you haven't left home.Quote:

I was talking to my local mechanic who does my RWCs the other day and we marvelled how people still buy European cars. The topic was an Opel he had in with electronic problems ( I think TPS) but the topic turned to VW.
I have a friend who had a diesel Jetta which had a DSG go out of warranty.
VW paid AFAIR parts and he paid labour and it cost him about $2500.
He also had a problem with AFAIK a "filter" which I assumed to be the particulate filter and it cost him $3000. He was very vague on what it was.
Now he has gone out and bought another VW!
The mechanic and I marvelled how people keep coming back for more. they must love leaning over. To me $5000 in repairs is just unacceptable and negates the good feeling of the driving experience.
While Japanese and Korean cars do not have the "panache" of a VW , BMW etc they seem to just keep going with minimal problems and Honda at least stand by their cars for years. I have a 2006 Jazz and recently had a recall for a change of the power window switch. NO problem but some Toyota owners had doused them in Armorall and they shorted and caught fire. The point is that if they do have a problem they stand by their product.

While you have a good point Phillip, if we all drove Toyotas there would be no AULRO, and there would be no advancement in auto engineering for toyota to copy in 5-10 years.
for example; there would be no coil springs (let alone air) and no full time 4x4 on Modern 4WDs.
But yes, every time I think of a tow truck and a VW dealer I start looking else where.
A couple of things there Phillip. Our passat is an 07 model, we had the injector problem 2 months ago, VW stood by this.
And isn't your land rover European?:p

I am always surprised by people who say Toyota are reliable. Toyota are just VERY good at hiding the problems.
I have a friend with a Prado about 3 years old, it has done around 80,000 kms and has had two sets of injectors so far, another friend with a Hilux (a good mechanic with his own business) says his injectors are in need of replacement at 65000 kms. He also says that the D4D is not a good motor at all.
Two other good friends had Prados and both had the rear doors replaced at their own cost, one was welded three times to repair cracks and then painted before giving up and buying a new door, these are shopping trolleys and the rear door (tailgate) would be lucky to be opened twice a day. One of the above also needed the whole instrument panel to be sent to America to be repaired as no one could fix it here and keep the original milage on it. One of the Prados was traded on a Rangie Sport with zero problems so far and the other for a VW Toureg also with no problems so far.

i dislike immensely they way i am treated by the dealers.
i had one warranty issue
a cracked radiator that they wouldn't replace under warranty
at $300 i wasn't a happy chappy but built a bridge after it became apparent it was going to be a fight to the death..
such a shame ....
