Herein lies the problem.
If they are being threatened with violence, I'd expect they'd knock on the first door they could reach in their street, maybe a neighbor.
It stretches the story and waters down the seriousness of their plight if they pass up the first door and go looking for a 'nice looking one in a nice street' many suburbs or towns away.

The National Security Hotline is the single point of contact for the public to report possible signs of terrorism. It also provides information to callers on a wide range of national security matters.
Small pieces of information can help protect Australia from terrorism. Australia’s national security agencies are working hard but members of the public can help them complete the picture.
Some of the best people to spot things that are out of the ordinary in a neighbourhood or workplace are those who are there everyday. As we go about our daily lives, we can keep an eye out for anything that may seem unusual or suspicious. Whether or not something is suspicious can depend on the circumstances. Look at the situation as a whole. If it doesn’t add up, call the 24-hour National Security Hotline.
Trained operators take every call seriously and you can remain anonymous. Information is passed on to Australia’s police and security agencies for analysis and further investigation. Remember, every piece of information helps.

I heard a sad story today. Let me give you a bit of background information first.
Vietnam is in our region. That is one of the reasons we have a large Vietnamese community here. A lot of Vietnamese escaped horrific circumstances and came here. I'll admit it was a rocky road but now they are part of our community.
When I look at a map I can see other countries are part of our region. Sri Lanka and the Pacific islands.
There is still political persecution going on in Sri Lanka I'm told and I'm also told some Pacific islands are being washed away. Being in our region, we have a duty to help out.
As far as I am aware, the middle east is not in our region. Middle eastern countries have a duty to help out other middle eastern countries.
Now the sad story. I heard an Australian woman who was born in Sri Lanka, fled persecution and was accepted into Australia as a refugee tell of the difficulty in getting her mother (who is also being persecuted) accepted into Australia as a refugee. I thought we were about reuniting families.
Thas Sri Lankan woman was citing "refugee intake quota" as one of the difficulties she is dealing with.
I wouldn't think she has a high opinion of queue jumpers as well.
Maybe something like this:
White Detroit-area man charged with murder of black woman | Reuters
Prosecutors charged a white suburban Detroit homeowner with second-degree murder on Friday, after he killed a young black woman with a shotgun blast to the face when she knocked on his door in the middle of the night seeking help after a car crash.
She may have been silly to be intoxicated, had marijuana in her system and ended up having an accident but did she deserve to be shot "accidentally"?
Bob
There should never be an accidental discharge of a firearm its stupidityHaving said that there is more to that story than has been reported so far like the accident was several blocks away from where she was shot and exactly how she tried to "ask" for help but then she may have been very disoriented from the crash and drugs and alcohol
still very sad
No argument with you there Mick. If she was breaking in - reasonable response.
We have the stupid opposite. The anti-gun lobby have been so successful with politicians of most persuasions pandering to them.
"Fight Crime on the spot - Shoot Back" is now defunct.
Many years ago a friend with a gunshop and repair business was stuck up by two crims. Result - one dead, one running - what were they thinking?
Back in the early 'sixties another friend who was a traveller for a firearm importing business was forced off the road by some bikies. They took off into the bush when he leapt out of the car firing warning shots. He then amused himself shooting holes in strategic parts of their bikes and reported it to the police in the next town. It was called protecting public safety then.
Could not happen today, just hand over the guns and get shot dead so you cannot identify the robbers.
Bob
So to answer the OP's original point; a valid one, politely put, my answer is NO. I do not see a role for compassion in the illegal entry issue.
I'll go further, I claim compassion, if that's what you call Rudd's legacy after the disastrous change in policy, is counterproductive and has increased human misery not lessened it.
Who we take from the camps, how many, and what we do for them when they get, compassion has a place. But in illegal arrivals absolutely not. And I'll claim the high moral ground too for what it's worth.
To pick holes in those last few postings, they are about a one off type of instances, inrespect.
The problem of rubber stamping all 'Illegal Immigrants' has a large base of 'clients' and is ongoing.
Another issue here that to be considered is the large number of pregnancy's timed to culminate with the arrival in Australia.
We need policy's not driven by greed or hated and at the same time not to give in to blatant exploitation.
