    hybrid build ideas?

So as some of you may know Im looking at getting a defender, But after looking around the style I want (twin cab 130) aren't up for sale much and when they are they just don't appeal to me (price a little too high and too far away to take a risk on)

And my old man thinks a disco would be better (cheaper but about the same in his words)

Well while dwelling on all these ideas and reading a magazine I was thinking about a hybrid. Ie disco chassis with a series style body on top.

    My aim would be
    • coil springs
    • series one body styling
    • canvas top
    • disk brakes
    • diesel
    • road registered
    • roll cage
    • REGO!!!

has anyone heard of this sort of thing in Australia?

I will be talking to an engineer off the books soon to see if its possible and how to go about it but just want everyones ideas

Engineering will demand a body of a similar age as the chassis, because ADRs follow the chassis' year of production. So the best bet is an early Rangie chassis and a series 3 body and a 300TDi driveline from a D1/Defender. You end up with a "100 inch" series, there's a few about.

Went looking for on google and found a post back here about it being done a few photos.

What about building the body from scratch?
I know people building clubmans and hotrods and basically it would be very much like that in principle (old styling with new components, mostly build at home etc)

Building a hybrid for less than the cost of a good used 130 would be a significant achievement!

What about looking around for a 110 or early Defender 200TDI ute or hardtop, (even a trayback and convert) to start with - change a few panels, even doors to Series and fit Series 2A or 3 softtop hoops. Remember the disc-braked coil suspensions have a wider track than Series vehicles so need flares.

ive been looking at about 13 grand to 17 for a 130.

I should probably point out that my background is in fabrication, right now im not doing that but the old man still has the shop, were already rebuild a moke from scratch (hence my want for a LR due to the easy panel shapes)

im thinking of a standard chassis, cutting it all the about 88 inches or so, building the cages straight on top of it, tube front fenders etc

My understanding is if you build your own panels/body, they must comply with the ADR's for the chassis.

ahh but because im not planning on dropping an original body on top (heaven forbid i destroyed an original) i could make the standard looking wings wider

If I had your skills and resources, I wouldn't be creating something so common as a 100" Landrover. What immediately comes to mind is a Morris Minor on a 100" chassis.
    That has been done before.
    But only once.
