no sweat, the 3.2 5 would be my choice. Yes the v6 would be shorter, but then again the 5 has less moving parts… id be happy with either TBH, but the 3.2 5 seemed like the logical choice for ROW

Buzz wrong answer the difference between identical spec rangers 2.2-3.2 is under $2000. And at the moment the up spec 3.2 XLS is $4k cheaper than the 2.2 XL! Also auto is a 2k option and a diff lock is also optional for the rear as well as standard traction control.
So using fords pricing on the engine and or tranny who would buy a 3.2 td5 defender for $2k more, and how many have bought other cars for far more than the $4000 cost of 3.2+auto ,simply because their partner could not drive a manual?
But as most are saying that boat may have already sailed as the 3.2 td5 defender should have rolled out the same time as the ranger Bt 50 duo.

Yeah, put that in a defender and their sales would increase.Prospective buyers see the small capacity engine, regardless of how good it goes,to the nissota offerings and go for the bigger engine.I also think landrover are happy with the commercial and military sales of the defender to worry too much about private sales.Well i suppose thats stating the bleeding obvious!

IMO it would be more, I bet LR see themselves as more than just a "FORD"… Im not saying its going to be Audi prices but they want over $4k for going to the bigger engine in the same car (A3 tdi)

Hmmm, me thinks they dont care about the Defender at all. It is a thorn in there sides as far as they are concerned. Look at world wide sales and it really is a joke by other manufacture standards. All those Military contracts dont add up to much as #1, seems they are loosing flavour, and #2 they arent buying new cars every year. Commerical?? Have a look here in Oz, the USA, Europe and Asia…are LRs filling any decent % of that market?

IMO it has a larger potential but that is not going to happen.

In terms of annual production compared with other makes, the Defender line is a "cottage industry" with a high "hands on" content. It does not/will not pass the ever increasing crash safety requirements to make it a profitable economic proposition... sad but true. Buy one...any one while you can!!

I made this point ,way back on this site about the ford 3.2 We know what happened when Ford brought Land Rover from BMW .Ford said we don't need two Diesel engine making plants , so to save money close Land Rover , supply from duratech range , after all they were making 1.2 million a year . The clever thing was they owned the td5 patient , so then It turns up in there made in Thailand . I know Defender is coming to the end of production , and the 3.2 will never go into a Defender , but I just thought It would have been a great option !!..

Are you saying the Td5 is still being produced for other vehicles?

We all assume that Landrover has access to any ford engine they want - I suspect not. I suspect that when Tata took over as part of the deal was to continue to provide certain engines for a certain period of time. I doubt Tata has access all engines like the 3.2 which is not a development of the TD5 so talking about other engines than variations of engines currently fitted to Landies.

If anyone knows what engine supply agreement that Tata has with Ford for the continued supply of engines please let us know.

Likewise obviously the agreement cannot continue forever so anyone have any clues what Tata intend for the future.
