Their obligation is to actively seek all kinds of work, casual, part-time, full time, and to accept any "suitable work" offered to them. Suitable work is defined as having fair award rates of pay and conditions, conducted at reasonable hours, within 1 1/2 hours travel of the client's residence, and the client is capable of performing the work without distress, injury, or exacerbating any conditions they may suffer. Piece work or commission only work is not "suitable work" as it does not pay a wage. If the farmer was unwilling to pay a wage, or retainer plus pay per container then an unemployed person can not be sent there. Much harvest work is payment by bag, bin, basket or whatever container is used.

Hey! I'm one of those useless layabouts.
If I lived within 1.5 hours from Darwin, I'd sail in Ean's boats. I'd be moving on if something better came along. I think that was one of the issues in the first post.

Sorry Mick , it was not my intention to collectively put all unemployed people in the same basket as layabout , I am fully aware of the predicament that people can find themselves in through no fault of there own , I probably should have been more descriptive . I am sure that there are people on the dole in Darwin
who would be more than suitable for the requirement of Ean,s needs if there was some real requirement by the Government to get them off their butts, even if only part time .

I heard that on the news this week too. Conversely *P have a policy of not employing anyone who lives more than an hour from where they are required to start and finish due to WH&S/fatigue issues.

Most benos used to have fits about 1 1/2 hours each way. I can just imagine the looks when an interviewer tells them they have to be prepared to travel 3 hours.

Certainly not since Control, Review, Compliance, and Investigation staff were shifted from these jobs in regional offices into customer service positions. Both sides of politics followed this path. Reduce staff, reduce staff, reduce staff. Don't do this, don't do that. Get rid of the queues. Get them paid quickly and so on. Field Officers and investigators now work on computer generated reviews from Area Offices. No more local fieldies who knew the villains, had good local networks for information. Whilst there are certainly benefits from the computer reviews, these do not catch the clients in the cash economy, have small businesses and still draw the dole, are in undeclared relationships,. and manifold other lurks.
