As with most food it is not just quality or quantity that determines how good it is, but also the atmosphere in which it is consumed..that is why for me the best pie will ALWAYS be the commercialised, extortionate priced, slightly overcooked pie, enjoyed with a "pint" of cold at the footy on a cold winters day...
More of a pasty man myself, and by votes go to the Middleton Bakery in SA who do both a regular and a square pasty (conflict of interest declared, my cousin owns the joint) - but they are bloody good.
Now that I live in Victoria, I always stop at Bordertown for a pasty, both because it's the first decent pasty you come to inbound to Adelaide, and I the last decent one outbound.
Great pasties (and cakes) at the bakery in Renmark too. I second the recommendation for the bakery in Port Wakefield.
No Victorian pasty has rated more than 7/10 in my books - the best in Gippsland being the Strezlecki bakery in Mirboo Nth and the bakery at Swifts Creek.
All Victorian bakers need to take a study tour to South Australia.
I'm not keen on Yatala pies, I find their quality too inconsistent. And who makes steak & kidney pie with mince?
Coolangatta Pie Shop used to be good, but they stopped doing steak & kidney! Idiots!
Slice of Pie, opposite Stocklands Shopping Centre at Burleigh, are very good.
Humble pie, on the Pacific Highway at Billinudgel, are good.
There's a coffee shop at the Northern end of the shopping centre at Kingscliff that sells very nice pies, supplied by... Sorry, can't remember right now.
Slightly off topic, but The Stunned Mullet on Marine Parade does superb fish & chips.
Byron bay pies are good, but hard to find unless you're at Byron Blues Fest - assuming they still have a stall there.
The Roses cafe at Goulburn does wonderful pies. Great food generally, in fact. But the pies are truly excellent. There's another branch of the Rose cafe at Yass, equally as good.
For anyone who likes pork pies or Cornish Pasties, there's an English bloke who alternates between the farmers markets at Palm Beach High School & the Powerhouse in Brisbane. He also does scotch eggs, Eccles cakes & other goodies.
The chicken and camembert pies you can get in most Tassie supermarkets are pretty damn good but the same flavour as served on the West Coast Wilderness Railway are even better![]()
Steak and kidney pie............... now that's the million dollar question.
Haven't seen one for years.
And yes, a good Pasty is a fabulous thing. Milang bakery used to make an awesome one. Light flaky pastry, and the contents cooked to perfection. Not the hard, crunchy, undercooked, heartburn inducing excuses you get from most places.
My favourite pies are no longer available as the old Pastry Cook/Bakers have passed on and obviously taken their secret recipes with them (Volks in Ouyen and Stewarts in Red Cliffs, Vic).
Every now and then I get the urge for a nice pie and usually end up disappointed. A good pie needs tomato sauce with it, but an "excellent" pie does not need any sauce.
On the other hand when I am in the bush a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie heated in the camp oven and served with creamy mashed spuds is awesome. I always carry a couple in my tucker box!
Cheers, Mick.

Pie in the Sky gets a few mentions so I am surprised the riders on here have yet to nominate Robertson Pie Shop, so I guess it's up to me.
Robertson Pie Shop.
