We have had foxtel for a number of years now and to be perfectly honest I am not really sure how happy with it we are, mainly for reasons stated above, in that if I could tailor my own content in a package then I would stay forever, but unfortunately that is not the case.
We have experimented a couple of times and limited our watching to only what is on offer on the free to air channels, but after a while found being forced to go to bed by 7.30 (just after the news) was a bit hard to take, so we have kept our Foxtel.
Just like P38rover, we have so much recorded on our IQ that we can be entertained for weeks on end if the worst comes to the worst.
Out of about 100 or so viewing options we regularly watch the ABC, SBS and only about three or four of the pay channels on offer and the worst of these is so far above the "best" on "Free to air" its just not funny.
So I guess whether Foxtel is the thing for you depends on which of the many different categories of viewer it is that you fall into.
If you are one of those who has no qualms about an 80 minute film being spread over 2.5 hours then keep your Free to air TV.
If you enjoy spending around $1.20 per phone call to vote for the best cook/dancer/singer/or whatever on one of these so called "reality shows" then keep your Free to air TV.
Foxtel can offer all of the above as well as a lot of old repeats and a random selection of excellent TV shows from other countries besides America, but you have to wade through a lot of garbage to find them and you also have to pay for it.
    Regards
    Glen

I have never had Pay TV. I dislike the fact you have to get a lot of crap to get one or two good shows. I also dislike the fact I pay for adds.
I buy TV shows and movies on DVD. You can get them cheap enough nowdays. In the end, it may work out cheaper than Pay TV. It's also good to take them to friends places for a DVD night. Gav and I are working our way through "Blakes 7".

I liked foxtel for the iq function and the sports, anytime day night would be something to watch from NASCAR to ufc to lawn bowls. But don't miss the $105/month bill.

I operate the same way. I'm not paying Foxtel to watch ads and free to air TV has so much unwatchable garbage that outside of the news and one or two other programs, I watch very little TV. Rather watch a DVD or be on the internet!!!
