Used to camp there a lot. My kids now at (or near) 30yrs used to swim and walk up the river, at night as well.
Then some crap happened and it was closed to campers. If you go up through Paluma and just keep on going you will know you are in the area as the Big Mongrel Signs will be more than evident. Further along is a mining lease so that is out as well. Keep driving to a "T" intersection, turn left to go to Hervey Range road, turn left for Townsville or right for the Lynd. Make sure you have enough fuel, there is nothing available and you would be lucky to meet any cars.
Alternatively you can go up through Paluma and turn right for Mt Spec and return via Ingham. Still need fuel, its an OK drive. It is wet right now so be careful as these roads are slippery.
Both of these drives take time so you need water and food.
There is a power line track up there as well but you need detailed instructions for that. Don't know if Paluma Dam is open yet, probably not with the rain, it is in a Rain Forest. Nice Camping. Book on Line.
Of course you could keep going through Mt Spec to Camel Creek then North to the Valley of Lagoons, (need to check if it is open, it is a Fauna and Flora Reserve and can be shut). Then back via Lucky Downs drive across the Burdekin and home on the Lynd and Hervey Range, big drive. Or at Camel Creek you could go strait and be home earlier but less of a drive.
But I digress,
Cheers,

Was (still is) a nice place. Shame you can't camp there any more.
