    Grass Seed and Black Ants

My lawns suffered this year during summer and as it was starting to get cooler I planted a lot of grass seed on the front yard to repair a lot of bare patches.

The next morning the the whole front yard as a sea of movement as the small black ants were collecting the seed and taking it back to their nests. The stockpile it around their hole and I spread it back around but it is a loosing battle. As it has been raining for a week the remaining seed has germinated with virtually no coverage as the ants have snaffled it.

Is there a way I can get of these annoying little seed stealers. I have tried products such as Ant Sand but it has had no impact on them.

I have spread some more seed during the rain this week but with the sun being out this morning, the ants are out in force stealing my seed again .

    Thanks

It will be a constant battle if they are the same as what I have. They aren't stealing my seed but are massing near the house in their millions. I have had some success with lots of cans of cheap fly spray. I hit them twice a day and wipe out all that are out of the nest, and they are starting to diminish, I just keep at them.

Although not environmentally friendly, I did have some success some years ago filling an underground nest up with petrol.

Lightly raking in the seed and keeping the ground moist will help keep the pests at bay. You will also get a far better strike rate compared to seed which is just left lying on the ground surface. The sub surface germinating seeds will take a tad longer than surface sown seed before the green growth is visible.

So this is a story I've been told, don't know how accurate it is but it has worked for me.
Most Australian ants are sugar ants, and most available bait are for sugar ants. We have a few ants around that are imports and many of these are Protein or grease ants. So you need a suitable bait.

We had an outbreak of "Argentinian" (that's what the guy across the road called them) ants, eventually a bait made from peanut butter and boric acid, did the trick. From memory the ratios were 10 parts peanut butter, 2 parts honey and 1 part boric acid (from the supermarket). I spread it over the bottom layer of bricks in several places around the house.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. I will investigate them a bit further and see how I go. I have tried most of the ant sand type stuff and it does not work but I will look at some some of the heavy guns suggested.

    Cheers

Diesel fuel poured down the ant holes does discourage them from returning to the area - as does used sump oil.

Don't ask me how I know that ......................
    Cheers .........
