What a tragic outcome for the young Newcastle player doctors have told his family he will never walk again poor bloke only 22 years old. It was a sickening tackle but i don't think at any stage was it a act to hurt this young man in this fashion. The average tackle count over a weekend is around the 5,000 mark so this sort of thing is very very rare. I have been involved in rugby league for over 20 years and have never seen anything like this. To his family best wishes and good luck for the future.

SupporterI thought those spear tackle things were banned. No one tackled like that when I was a kid.
Grab them round the legs.
The only reason that sort of tackle is used is to injure.

This has been incorrectly reported.
He is currently a quadraplegic.
Spinal cord is not severed.
Spinal injuries are reported in the present tense. He is currently a quadraplegic but as swelling subsides, he may well regain feeling, movement, and with a lot of work make a substantial recovery.
No one can say it is permanent as yet.
I hope he does make a good recovery.

I agree, It was an accident. If he didn't bend his head, it did not happen. Tragic, and gut wrenching. But, an accident. Spare a thought as well for the kid who has been put on report for the tackle. How must he feel? And he has done nothing wrong, Bob

I have to agree with you. I will always remember my then Primary School Principal screaming out from the side lines, "they can't run without legs - tackle him!
Funny - something must have changed in the meantime that this statement does not still apply. Another reason for the type of tackle is to slow down the rate of play.

Absolute shame for the young bloke. Hopefully he will make a recovery from this initial diagnosis (it has happend before).
A split second decision to duck his head to draw the penalty has such a bad outcome but with 3 players in the tackle and 300kgs+ it is not going to be good.
As Cam Smith stated to the ref. "no one wants to see that happen"
And it was not a spear tackle it was hardly through the horizontal.
